Anyone have any info about how many new green cards are issued each year?? If we can find that, then we will know how fast DHS is ramping up for next year compared with the average number of cards it issues. I'll keep looking, and hope that we will discover what the average issuance is.

OK--I found some decent info that suggests there are 700,000 - 800,000 green cards issued every year, so the 1.8 million in new green card orders this year is about 2.5 times the norm...sounds like a good way to jump start whatever DHS is expecting.

I found some #'s on the Green cards
Okay per the U.S Legal Permanent Residents:2008 by Homeland Security;

There were a total of 1,107,126 granted green cards. Out of these #'s 466,558 were new arrivals and 640, 568 adjusted status meaning they were already here in the U.S. I cannot attach the link (dont know how).

so that suggests that the new card orders this year would be about a 60% increase over that 2008 level. Still a positive sign...let's see what they order late this year for mid 2010 delivery.So i think they buy it every year.

DHS had bought over $5 million of new green cards in the first half of this year, or about 1.1 million cards. And the order that i mention it is an additional 700,000 cards. The cards actually go to a subcontractor who adds the personal information for each new card holder, so they need to have them in their warehouse so they can respond to orders from DHS.

While it is good to see large number purchases, they would be in pretty much the same situation as we are in knowing what will happen, and large purchases could be based on their speculation that the DA will pass, which I still like because it means that they, and their experts, would also think that something big was about to happen to require a large order of cards.

1.8 million cards is a great number to hear. I hope that the 700-800k cards issued per year includes cards issued due to people losing them or having them stolen, because that would me that they have an extra million cards and what seems to be a twice per year buying schedule. some figures that I am seeing around on the internet suggests the number of undocumented children in k-12 hovers at around 1 million, and that approx. 1.3 million students could potentially benefit from this act.

not to be a killjoy, but if the DA passes, i thought that everyone would get temporary residency for a 6-year period then be able to apply for a green card.

Temporary residency = "conditional green card holder" = you still have to get some sort of card that might say "conditional alien resident".

From what I found, apparenlty you get the conditional, and after 5.5 years you would get the permanent or you could immediately apply for citizenship

conditional residency card will be granted to dreamers if DA passes. I still think they need some kind of card or documents for dreamers. So I still think this is a good news

this isn't the first step, they have already invested in an improved USCIS website, where you can now enter your petition case number and find out the status immedietly, plus cleared up the background check backlog which was one of the main things slowing down the process.

what? since when do colleges buy greencards and give them out? wait what is going on....new laws or something, dont mean to sound dumb, mmmm been outta the country for a year....does anyone want to update/ ive never heard of this before.

USCIS is not a school, it is the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (previously known as the INS - Immigration & Naturalization Services)
