McCain Runs Away from DREAMers as Reid Vows Senate Vote

On Wednesday, six undocumented youth staged an all-day sit-in in Arizona Sen. John McCain’s D.C. office to try to force the senator to give a statement of support for the DREAM Act, which he’d cosponsored in the past. Late in the day, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he plans to introduce the DREAM Act as a stand alone bill.

The day ended with four arrests and no such statement from McCain, but McCain heard their message loud and clear.

So loudly and so clearly, in fact, that he attempted to make a side-door exit to avoid confrontation with the students. Matias Ramos, a DREAM activist and founding member of United We DREAM, a group that’s organizing to win passage of the bill, said the group of young people only managed to snag a quick exchange with McCain because they chased him down a hallway as he tried to exit one of his office’s five doors.

“We’d like to serve the country. Will you support the DREAM Act and allow us to serve?” Ramos said Gaby Pacheco, one of the activists asked him. “Good, good, go serve the country then,” Ramos said McCain replied, before sliding into a senators’ elevator and being whisked away. ....................................................

That is very insulting and sad. God bless those courageous individuals! They will and we will get what we deserve regardless of what McCain wants. I will pray to God everyday thanking him McCain is not president.

The only reason McCain is being such a bitch is because he advocated so heavily for immigration reform and wanted to win over the Latino vote during the 2012 election, and he didn't. I think that's why he's so upset. But whatever, he's still a bitch and didn't deserves to win the election, shows how much Republicans are hypocrites.

strong article, wow, those dreamers are the real heroes, despite the threat of arrest they stayed and McCain a past supporter of dreamers and pro-immigration tactics turned arguably one of the most if not the most anti-immigration senator this congressional session and what does he respond?!

I don't applaud this article, instead I feel ashamed that this is the response of someone that could have potentially been our president and the representative of this nation, he does not represent what the United States of America is about.

Did anyone here ever think that these blitzkreig tactics of hunger strikes, camping out in McCain's office, etc. might be TURNING THESE PEOPLE OFF?
Personally, if someone demanded that I do something, I ignored them, then they camped out in my backyard, I told them no, they stayed, then I said "I promise I'll think of it if you go away" the guy says "YES he's gonna think about it!" while at the same time I run to change my locks.

I mean seriously guys, I think this is a cultural difference, but a lot of people get really turned off when people do this stuff.

Do you think if McCain was elected, CIR/DA would have passed in the early stage of 2009? That was his 1st priority though.

This is starting to become reminiscent to the civil rights movement. Using words like the oppressed, sending non-violent protesters to jail, passing laws that target certain individuals, ensuring people don't have an identity and that this country does not recognize their identity either and ensuring people are not able to serve this country, this is slowly becoming like the type of dystopian societies you read in a fiction book.

Somehow, I still have faith in McCain. I believe he'll do the right thing.

If McCain were so adamantly opposed to Dream Act, he should have released a public statement now instead of playing the hide and seek game.

According to Michelle Malkin blog, McCain's staff says he “hasn’t made a public statement” and “hasn’t made up his mind.”

You and I agree on tons of things, Victor. But McCain actually being a man and doing what's right about DA is not one of them.

He's a coward. What a shame for a war vet that went through the ordeal that he went through. I miss the real Maverick. The one who would flip off the GOP and did things his own way. I really was a big fan of him. Screw this new McCain.

i really hope that reid and obama can persuade all democrats to unite and help pass the dream act, all we need is 60 votes to begin, 51 to pass it, and 60 to close debate. i hope they can at least help at biginning and closing the debate. god help us!!

You make it sound like people have to be careful to make their voices heard. Politicians are not doing us a favor by voting on policies, it's their jobs to listen to people and it's people's responsibility to let their voices heard. Politicians are not some lords that people serve, they are the ones who are serving for the nation because they were elected by the people and thus make policies according to what people want.

Instead, as many of you already know, politicians often make decisions based on their own benefits rather than for you. So chances are, if you keep quiet, you're non-existent to them. Quiet guys finish last

Actually, they are doing a favor. Technically they represent the voters, and we aren't the voters. Everyone should be greatful that this has a shot at passing right now, but seriously, stop acting entitled to it.
