Obama encourages students to carry 'the dream'

MIAMI, Fla. -- Capping off a busy day that took him from surveying tornado damage in Alabama to a scrubbed shuttle launch in Cape Canaveral -- where he met with the recovering Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- President Obama encouraged graduating college students here to persevere and keep in mind that America's best days are ahead of it.
Despite discrimination and injustices in the country's past, "We carried the dream forward," Obama told about 4,000 students of Miami Dade College's North and West campuses here at the packed James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami.
Obama was warmly received. When he was introduced, he was greeted with chants of his 2008 presidential campaign slogan, "Yes, we can." The venue provided the president an audience with a key constituency group -- young, mostly African American and Hispanic students -- in a swing state. Miami Dade College is the largest institution of higher education in the country with more than 174,000 students enrolled, according to the school. It also boasts that it graduates more black and Hispanic students than any other in the nation.
And he didn't miss the opportunity to lay out his vision of society for the students, many of whom will vote for the first time in 2012.
He said the country faces choices between fighting for the middle class or not, continuing to invest in education and clean energy (instead of being vulnerable to swings in oil price), breaking promises to seniors and the disabled and "tell them to fend for themselves" or "keep strengthening" the social safety net, and pushing for immigration reform or not.
Many of those topics are ongoing battles in Washington, in particular, recently, the debate over Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) budget proposal that would phase out a government-run Medicare program for those who are currently younger than 55 years old.
Obama again voiced support for the DREAM Act, which would give students in American schools but who weren't born in the United States citizenship. Obama noted that some Miami Dade College students had admitted to being undocumented in hopes of getting the DREAM Act passed.
"I firmly believe we should fix our immigration system," Obama said, adding, "I will keep fighting along side many of you in order to make the DREAM Act the law of the land. … It will be difficult, and it will take time. I know some of you wish that I could bypass Congress and change the law myself, but that’s not how democracy works. Democracy is hard, but it’s right."
Obama also drew on his peronal story, talking of his father and his efforts to get into a college, as well as his personal hopefulness for the direction of the country, rooted, in part, in his seeing astronauts come ashore in Hawaii while sitting atop his grandfather's shoulders when he was a boy. He likened that to today, when his daughters toured a space shuttle and got to meet with astronauts at Cape Canaveral.
That's "my proof America endures," Obama said. "Our brave endeavor on this earth continues."

He could do more for us sure, but ^is that supposed to be the voice of an elite group of undocumented students, with potential to contribute to the nation? "Fuck u Obama we lacka papers nobody hire us"

Jesus christ... I can only hope that no one (that matters) comes across your post just now, because your grammar is worse than a 5 year old - which unfortunately is just an extension of your thought process.

Who gave this kenny guy a degree? He is everything that is wrong with Dreamers. I seriously hope you guys don't get legalized even with the Dream Act. Respect comes first and when you insult the president you sound like one of those tea partiers asking for his birth certificate.

In the other hand, I agree with the President, the change must come from congress, not from him only.

You don't get a degree by being respectful lol. Those from Ivy Leagues who head off to investment banks are one of the biggest assholes. lol.

and Obama's not giving you a paper no matter how much we respect him. I respect Durbin and Gutierrez though. Screw Obama. I have no respect for liars.

TRUE, Obama promised latinos voter from the beginning to now, and does he really action more than talk? or ?
Durbin and Gutierrez are the man that we should respect them only.

You know what pisses me off? How in the living F*** can you wish misfortune on someone who is undocumented. And you consider yourself better than the DREAMERS who are simply voicing their dissenting opinions? Go to hell.

What has he been doing to push the congress to pass immigration reform these past 2 years? The only time Obama talks about immigration is when he is in front of a latino audience.

Re: Obama encourages students to carry 'the dream'

I'm having difficulty deciding which party to side with here. I can see where all of you are coming from. I've had both of these thoughts of love and hate for Obama over his first term as well. Lets just put it this way. We do have to support President Obama and other supporters of DA but at the same time we should NOT put them on a pedestal. This is exactly what many of us did with Obama when he won in 2008 and this is the main reason why we are being forced to curse at him. So, I think we should continue supporting him but hold him accountable this time. Give him a taste of his own medicine. He won the election because of young voters using social networks. The same people who gave him this presidency can bring him down as well. I'm sure he is aware of this. This is the nerve that we must hit if we want our bill passed. And btw, Obama was definitely not born in Kenya.

He never said he would bring about the DREAM Act single-handedly without congress.

Where have you been for the last 3 yrs? in '08 before he was in the office, he said time and time again that he would bring up CIR within the next 100 days within becoming president. 100 days became 3 months.. 1 yr.. now nothing.

Why shouldn't he be angry? Biting the hand that fed us? Fed us what? You do realize Obama's acting on his own interest right? Obama's priority is to please growing Latinos, not to sympathize us.

i agree with you, Obama hasn't lied to us. but where is his promise?? he should bring up immigration reform at the first year, and i am pretty sure they knew Dream Act will not pass last year in the congress , but they still tried to force to pass it. finally all FAIL!! this year, we all know Obama has to attract more latino Votes for his presidency.

i am not a hater and tea party member, but i am a student without any legal paper just like all of you guys. This forum is our only place that can share our story with each other. we all very disappoint the Dream Act was failed again. In fact Obama is talking in front of media more than action. EVEN Rep. Luis Gutierrez might not back Obama in 2012.

plus Obama says he can't order halt to deportations forl all Dreamers. if he really care Dreamer, he should sign it with no problem!!!!!!

He said he would deal with immigration reform in the first year of his term; we would become legal via such legislation. However, he did not do anything = liar!!!

You can try to defend him by saying that the economy was awful, and, as a result, he had to prioritize progress. Excuse me. The economy is just as bad now or evern worse, so why is he trying now? He is a liar, and he clearly contradicts himself.

He can't bring the CIR up in congress. Congressional leadership has to do it. He can't force a vote or do anything. All he can do is sign the bill when it reaches his desk, and run around campaigning and drumming up support.

You guys know the limits on a president's power, right?

Yup, he is quite limited in terms of what he can do on immigration legislation until, for instance, federal spending comes up.
