While i do believe ppl should learn the english language since they are in the US...for some reason this commercial seems so wrong. Just the way he said it, "This is alabama we speak english, if you wanna live here learn it" he was so blunt about it

Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
I disagree with people who keep calling for English only in the USA. This is bigotry in disguise. As far as I know this country speaks English because the majority of people in the country spoke English. There has always been different languages but the biggest immigrant groups to the country in the 1800's where the English and then on the 1900's the Irish. So English made sense. Now we have a new country that encompass parts of what use to be Mexico (Spanish Speaking country) a lot of the people who where annexed in the 1900 spoke Spanish. Over the past 110 years migration to the USA of Latin Americans had created a society of about 50 million people who speak Spanish. That in a 310 million people nation is a significant number so Spanish should be fully recognize as a second language. To give you an example there are 7 million french speakers in Canada a nation of 35 million people and they get second language status.
I know is hard for a lot of immigrants to understand my point of view, but I feel that west of the Mississippi all that was pioneered, settle or facilitated the settlement of land by the Spanish speaking populations. My ancestors who created the routes and towns that the English speaking people use to build their nation. |

that's the point. there is not one language recognized as an official language. Sure english is the de facto idom of the land, but why are whities getting pissed if they hear some other tongue around them? |
Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
he's using a fiscal plan as a thin veil for his bigotry. There was no need to specify : LEARN IT. A simple: If I'm elected, all government documents will be in English. etc. Such bullshit.

English is the language most people speak in this country and if I want to be more competitive learning English is on my advantage, but that should be my choice and not a mandate. Offer to teach English but don't hate people for not learning. |

There is nobody asking anyone to learn Spanish. If you want a job where Spanish is a requirement then you should have to learn Spanish. Just like if you want to be a doctor you need to have a PHD. What is the real problem you have with people not learning English. If you know English then it really does not affect you does it? Why does it bother you? |

Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
Sure English is the most common but all languages should be welcomed.

Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
I'm sorry but there is no excuse for people refusing to learn the language of a country they emigrated to. I speak 4 languages and it still annoys me when I see a family speaking Spanish at the store, when I know they're not tourists. It's just plain rude.

Finally the great majority of Spanish speakers have some ability with English. So I don't understand why people make such a big deal. As you can tell I have a better vocabulary that most Americans but I still like to be greeted on my language when I go to a restaurant or talk the chisme with the construction workers. Again I don't bother you in any way by keeping my language or culture. |

Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
Come on now...if you go to live in a country, you should learn the main language. It's quite simple. You should be able to speak your own as well, but if you need services FROM THE GOVERNMENT that transaction should be done in English...just as it would be in Spanish in Mexico

Not if it means abandoning your roots.
Just give me a work permit, you can have the "American" label.. |
Re: This is Alabama"We speak English"
A language is the most common thread a nation or country can have. It builds unity and breaks down prejudice.
Obviously it would also be helpful for people to learn the language of the country they're in. It'd be weird to wonder in a foreign country without speaking the language. I think that if you choose to live in a country, you should learn to speak the language whether it be English, French, Spanish, on and on. Not only is it courteous, it is also helpful as you will be able to understand what people are saying and you will be able to ask for things and be understood. Moreover, it will show that you are willing to learn, and accept some of that society's culture. If you live in a country for x amount of years you should make the effort to learn the common language. Just because someone is an immigrant it doesn't mean that person should abandon their mother tongue, their culture or heitage as it's important to have, but people should make the effort to learn another language if they are intending to live outside their country for a very long time. I hope I didn't say anything to offend anyone. |

ughhh! Today I took a bus from nyc to Chicago and when I asked the Asian guy if it was going to X he just jerked his neck violently and dramatically as he enthusiastically said: "uh huh uh huh!! goig to Chicago!"
HA! It was going to Virginia! FML. This is why everyone should speak a unified language in a country or at least make better efforts to communicate correctly. smh... |
