While i do believe ppl should learn the english language since they are in the US...for some reason this commercial seems so wrong. Just the way he said it, "This is alabama we speak english, if you wanna live here learn it" he was so blunt about it

I do agree... But I highly doubt these people are doing it purely for those reasons..

I disagree with people who keep calling for English only in the USA. This is bigotry in disguise. As far as I know this country speaks English because the majority of people in the country spoke English. There has always been different languages but the biggest immigrant groups to the country in the 1800's where the English and then on the 1900's the Irish. So English made sense. Now we have a new country that encompass parts of what use to be Mexico (Spanish Speaking country) a lot of the people who where annexed in the 1900 spoke Spanish. Over the past 110 years migration to the USA of Latin Americans had created a society of about 50 million people who speak Spanish. That in a 310 million people nation is a significant number so Spanish should be fully recognize as a second language. To give you an example there are 7 million french speakers in Canada a nation of 35 million people and they get second language status.

I know is hard for a lot of immigrants to understand my point of view, but I feel that west of the Mississippi all that was pioneered, settle or facilitated the settlement of land by the Spanish speaking populations. My ancestors who created the routes and towns that the English speaking people use to build their nation.

You have a very good point I also know all about the history of this country.. I'm not advocating English only that is stupid.. I'm just saying learn to speak English it's better for you and it's better for everybody..

Well if you want Spanish to re recognized as a second language, that means basically anyone who doesn't speak it has to learn? which alot of people don't really want to do. I believe everyone should speak which ever langauge they want but I mean It makes sense that if you come to America Illegally or Legally you have to learn English just to get by.

that's the point. there is not one language recognized as an official language. Sure english is the de facto idom of the land, but why are whities getting pissed if they hear some other tongue around them?

I would it use different words but the idea is that. I'm not advocating for everyone to learn Spanish that's just as bad as asking everyone to speak only English. I'm asking for people to recognize that Spanish is part of this society and that it can be a benefit for the society. I don't understand why is so difficult to accept that some people speak a different language that the one you do.

English is the language most people speak in this country and if I want to be more competitive learning English is on my advantage, but that should be my choice and not a mandate.

Offer to teach English but don't hate people for not learning.

There are Bilingual people in America not just Spanish speaking people. Some Bilinguals speak German, French, Italian, Hindu, Mandarin and etc. I'm Bilingual I speak English and French. It's very hard and takes alot of time to learn another language. Like some jobs if you don't speak Spanish they don't give up you it :(. When you have to learn Spanish because someone else doesn't want learn English it's really annoying. Not everyone has money to go learn a 2nd or 3rd language. I don't think America should only be a speaking Country but if you come here why not learn English? Instead of forcing people to take Spanish classes like whats going on in California, it's just seems wrong to me but that's my opinion. Reason is not everyone has the time, money or other life issues to be learning another language...That Commercial Just brought the topic in a negative aspect....

I dunno. I'm not going to apply for a job as an interpreter if I don't know the language(s) required. Sure makes perfect sense to accommodate for a foreign language speaking majority to maximize revenue (capitalism at its best). I mean hell, the rest of the world does it for American tourists, you want me to feel bad cuz Pedro couldn't get a job as a hotel receptionist in Cancun 'cuz he only speaks Spanish? GTFO!

It's called a job description, you either fit the bill or you don't; I sure as hell won't blame a 3rd party.

There is nobody asking anyone to learn Spanish. If you want a job where Spanish is a requirement then you should have to learn Spanish. Just like if you want to be a doctor you need to have a PHD. What is the real problem you have with people not learning English. If you know English then it really does not affect you does it? Why does it bother you?

This is what you said," That in a 310 million people nation is a significant number so Spanish should be fully recognize as a second language." If your going to say something like that you might as well just of said,"learn Spanish". Which I'm saying not everyone wants to learn another language. You don't see any German, French or Chinese person saying there language should be fully recognized as a second language. One of my friends didn't get a job at Gold Gym because he didn't Spanish :|. Why do you need to know Spanish if you want to be an employee at a Gym? Also at times like when you go to a Fast Food restaurant you have to say your order so many times because the person only knows Spanish or someone has to help them that is like bilingual, it's really annoying. I'm sure you know some people who been here for like 20 years or maybe more and never learned how to speak English. I don't have a problem with someone not wanting to learn English but if you come here illegal or legally then it makes perfect sense to learn the language if you expecting to live successfully instead of making excusing not to. When my family came here we didn't complain about learning English. I know some Latino are going to be piss about my post but I'm stating my opinion on this. I just don't think it's fair because someone can't speak English you have to learn their language in America. If I was to learn my 3rd language it would probably be Mandarin Chinese or German just for the simple fact because I always wanted to. I just don't like being force to do certain things. I fogot to add this my girlfriend is from Switzerland she is Multilingual. She knows German, Swiss-German, English, and French. There was this job ad that said you had to bilingual to getthe job. So, she she knew more than2 we though she going to get it...then she applied to it but she didn't get it. Guess why lol

I'm sorry but there is no excuse for people refusing to learn the language of a country they emigrated to. I speak 4 languages and it still annoys me when I see a family speaking Spanish at the store, when I know they're not tourists. It's just plain rude.

I see your problem, is not so much that you defend English but more like you envy the position Spanish holds in this country. Well that's just because of the number or Spanish Speakers on the Country. This is just part of the reality of the country. It's important not to project your insecurities onto other people. That's the main reason the only English group fight so much for this. They feel they are being invaded.

Finally the great majority of Spanish speakers have some ability with English. So I don't understand why people make such a big deal. As you can tell I have a better vocabulary that most Americans but I still like to be greeted on my language when I go to a restaurant or talk the chisme with the construction workers. Again I don't bother you in any way by keeping my language or culture.

I can assure there is no reason for me to envy Spanish. America has over 300 million people only like 30-40 million speaks Spanish thats 13%? So, because I think it's a pathetic lazy excuse that some people come here illegal or legal for like 20 years and not learn a bit of English makes me insecure? The only reason certain jobs would want you to speak Spanish is for MONEY nothing else. I have a couple of friends who came here illegal one is from Bosnia. His whole family made an effort to learn English, it's not great but you understand them just fine. It only seems to be like some Spanish family who come here refuse learn the main language which makes the Government force others to take Spanish classes just to increase GDP. I'm not going to speak on this further.

Come on now...if you go to live in a country, you should learn the main language. It's quite simple. You should be able to speak your own as well, but if you need services FROM THE GOVERNMENT that transaction should be done in English...just as it would be in Spanish in Mexico

there's 67 official tongues in Mexico besides Spanish. The government prints documentation and books (for education) in said tongues and distributes them according to geographical density.

A language is the most common thread a nation or country can have. It builds unity and breaks down prejudice.

Obviously it would also be helpful for people to learn the language of the country they're in. It'd be weird to wonder in a foreign country without speaking the language.

I think that if you choose to live in a country, you should learn to speak the language whether it be English, French, Spanish, on and on. Not only is it courteous, it is also helpful as you will be able to understand what people are saying and you will be able to ask for things and be understood. Moreover, it will show that you are willing to learn, and accept some of that society's culture. If you live in a country for x amount of years you should make the effort to learn the common language.

Just because someone is an immigrant it doesn't mean that person should abandon their mother tongue, their culture or heitage as it's important to have, but people should make the effort to learn another language if they are intending to live outside their country for a very long time.

I hope I didn't say anything to offend anyone.
