Do you need to have your birth certificate translated for this process and if you do how much and where could you typically do this?

USCIS website says you need to translate every document that is not in english. I translated my birth certificate with a notary, he charged me 20 bucks.

You can translate it yourself if you're competent enough with English. I can give you a template of it if you PM me. Or you can do the notary thing.

USCIS explicitly says you can't translate your own documents. They have to be translated and certified by someone else.

I uploaded a scan of my birth certificate to an online document translation service and got a notarized, certified translation in the mail in 3 weeks. It cost like $70 but I felt like splurging.

I used FoxTranslate. $29 and I got it in 10 hours! They send you an email, and you print it out. It's all professional, and certified looking. :D

But if you're looking to save some cash, have someone translate it for you. There are templates all over the forums.

Yes the instructions clearly state that any document submitted in a foreign language needs to be translated and certified by someone who is fluent in English and Spanish...(or any other foreign language). I didn't read anything saying that translated documents needed to be notarized, so I had someone who is fluent in both languages certified the translation. I translated it myself using "Google Translator", then I had another person review it/edit ,and have that individual sign it/date it/ and write contact ifo and address. THAT'S IT!. Crap I didn't translate anything. http://dreamact.info/forum/customava...tar16292_8.gif I just sent it as it was. But I also submitted my valid passport and an expired passport - that should be enough to prove my identity right? Even if my BC was in Portuguese.

I wouldn't say you will get denied due to sending a untranslated foreign document. Either, they will accept it, or reject your application and send it back to you to correct.

Well like I said, I did send a copy of my current valid passport - so even if the BC is unacceptable, the passport should suffice right?

Yes, it should be. The required documents said that you just need one - passport or birth certificate, etc.

Bumping this bc I'm in the same boat as carnivore here. Sent a copy of my valid passport but sent an untranslated copy of my birth certificate. Wondering if any of the approvals did the same?

You are not screwed... You will be recieiveng an RFE don't be nervouse they will be asking to submitt it with a translated copy! So be prepare for that

Not true. I called them you can do it yourself if your competent enough.

i called them to ask them if they needed the birth certificate to be notarized and they said it didnt need it to be, but since i work at a tax office i had the notary do it for me for free but i would HIGHLY recommend getting it notarized, you wont loose anything but like 30 50 bucks which i think is well worth it! good luck
