CA DL thread

Code:

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles will start issuing driver’s licenses to those here illegally who qualify for President Obama’s two-year stay of deportation, potentially reigniting political battles in the state Capitol over undocumented immigrants.

I plan on applying for my ca dl as soon as they update me on my ssn. Meanwhile, I'm studying the driving guide.

California OKs driver's licenses for some undocumented immigrants
By Mary Slosson
Reuters
SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers have approved a bill to allow some young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to obtain driving licenses, in a move that could appeal to Hispanic voters in the heavily Democratic state.

The bill, which passed the state Assembly by a 55-15 vote late Thursday before being sent to the desk of Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, was introduced following the announcement of a federal program to relax deportation rules and grant some young immigrants temporary legal status in the United States.

"It is a victory for those who were brought here through no fault of their own, played by the rules, and are only asking to be included in and contribute to American society," the bill's sponsor, Assembly member Gilbert Cedillo, said in a statement

Ok guys. I called the CA DMV. And told this fine sounding bitch that I'm still waiting for my SSN. But that I have my I 797A. And EAD. And she's like. Yea you should be fine. So she made my appointment for next week. And since I have a wa dl they'll wave the driving test but I'll need to take the written one.

Yes. You're right. There's a little box that makes you promise that you will inform them when you get your number.

So basically we DON'T need to wait for our SSN to arrive before applying for a CA ID? This makes me a bit more relieved and excited. My goal is to have an official ID before the first week of November. :)

EDIT: That form says if you're not 'presently eligible for one' .. but technically, we are. So..?

I'll be taking the form i got from SSA and tell them it's on the way. And I'll let them know when I get it.

i walked in without appointment grrr there is a disclaimer on back that states if you are eligible for an ssn u need to provide it or app gets denied.

You won't be issued a DL unless you have a printout from SSA that says you are not eligible for one.

If you get one you will be .00001% of applicants.

If you're waiting for one, then you are eligible, thus you cannot check that Box.

This is what I figured in terms of technicality. There is also that currently pending law Brown has yet to sign that will affect us. User 'teacup' said that with receipts of EAD/I-821D approval, it might be possible to get the DMV to issue something? It's automatically law by the 4th if he doesn't veto it.

That Law is useless.
We can get a DL w/out that Law.

People need to read the law, not believe hearsay.

If around the time it becomes law and people are barely receiving their EAD's in the mail, it could help skip the impatient wait of obtaining a SSN before going to the DMV to try to obtain identification. Not sure how that would make the law worthless..

Someone obviously did not READ the law.

This bill would allow persons who provide satisfactory proof, as described, that their presence in the United States is authorized under federal law, but who are not eligible for a social security account number, to receive an original driver’s license from the Department of Motor Vehicles if they meet all other qualifications for licensure.
With an EAD are DACA beneficiaries not eligible for a SSN??????????????????????????????????????????????????? How is that different from how CA DMV issues DL/ID NOW?

Seriously... I don't even know why I try.

I am curious how someone comes up with an opinion based on hearsay? Care to enlighten me.

So in summary my point stands law is USELESS!

So I suppose is this what I get for reading all the news articles and not the actual text of the law. My mistake.

This forum seems to be getting quite the best of you. May I suggest a break?

Someone will always be ahead of you, and someone will always be behind you.

Thanks for clarifying, anyway. Now that puts me where you are in terms of this.

Ill go next week to get the permit and provide my SSN that says "not valid for employment". I don't think they will make a big deal.

You won't because you already have a SSN, which will come back as VERIFIED.
The only thing holding you back was a Legal Presence document, but now you have one, so you're case is not the case of the majority of us.

the law brown has in his desk is supose to help those who cannot get a work permit but are approved for I-821d, there was a content in the law that has "accepted" in there and puts things out of context. Its in the news section i don't recall but as you have said you go to ssn with I-821d or w/e and aren't eligible for an ssn that law supose to help you. So those who don't get a work permit can get an id/d.l atleast but yeah going and looking at the info its pretty much like it was said before.
and the apps online don't have the disclaimer the actually appt that explains the ssn part :/ sucks o well

You put down the number, they check, if it's all good, they don't ask questions. If it comes back :(
They ask for the card and talk to SSA.
