This might be related: http://gantdaily.com/2017/02/28/sour...igration-bill/

President Donald Trump is eager to pass an immigration bill, a senior administration official told reporters Tuesday.

The President is thinking about adding the topic to his speech tonight to a joint session of Congress, though either way an immigration bill remains a desire for his first term. The topic of enforcing current immigration laws is already in the speech, the official said.

The President believes that the nation is now in a position where it can pass immigration legislation, the senior administration official said, with the need to have “a softening on both sides. There’s got to be a coming together.”

A path to citizenship for those in the country illegally would not be part of Trump’s vision for this deal, with the possible exception of “Dreamers” — those brought into the US illegally as children. The President envisions a bill where those who haven’t committed any serious crimes could stay in the US legally, holding a job and paying taxes, without having to worry about being deported.

The President does not see the bill as something that would necessarily upset his base, since both sides would need to compromise.

“It has to be a negotiation,” the official said, arguing that the bill theoretically could make people on both the “far right” and “far left” happy.

“It could be good for everyone,” the senior administration official said. “People are exhausted” from debating the topic.

Saw it coming. Trump wants to be Reagan so bad.

So, LPR + Citizenship for DREAMERS, LPR with no path to citizenship for everyone else.

That don't make sense.

LPR means citizenship.

You must mean "something akin to DACA" for the rest.

Trump needs the goodwill of both sides so bad.

Both sides will jump on this.

Hopefully, Dems don't derail Trump's plan.

Dems very well might.

WOW! i went home this weekend to Palm Springs and talked to a family friend (that donates huge amounts of money to the republican party) and she told me Trump told her he wanted to do this.... I obviously did not believe her but now I do...

It doesn't. LPR = Lawful Permanent Resident aka Green Card. Right now, After being a LPR for 5 years 3 (if you are married with U.S Citizen) you can apply for citizenship.

Trump and congress can create a different type of Green Card for the undocumented population and called it "Blue Card" or something? They will have the same rights as Green Card holders with the exception that they will never be able to become citizens (To keep them from voting, being one of the main reasons. I am sure)

Yup Dems will ruin this for sure. They'll demand US citizenship for everybody. Nothing less.

Dems would be idiots not to take this!! Just say yeah, and when you have supermajority in congress again in 10 or 15 years just offer citizenship.

Yes...The first step is the hardest. If this passes, they can always add to it or tweak it later with a more friendly congress. I really hope the dems don't screw this up like Bernie did that other time.

We might end up thanking Trump for our LPR/Citizenship, it's definitely an odd feeling.

If so, I am ready to abandon the Democratic party. I only hung onto them because of their position on immigration. Trump is more in the position to pass whatever he wants than Hillary, who would have faced struggle just because of who she is and how hated she is on capitol hill.

My father was right.

Clinton couldn't

Bush couldn't

Obama couldn't

Now is our best chance.

Citizenship for everyone: tried and failed. It will never work!

Work permit for non criminal undocs. LPR for DACA. +Strenghtening everywhere.

Only possible way.

Re: Comprehensive immigration reform

Dems will not work with Trump on this. That's a certainty. Nixon tried to pass single payer universal health care. Wanna guess who blocked Nixon? Yup you guessed it, the Democrats. Senator Ted Kennedy killed all efforts of Nixon. Every party not in the White House will always oppose the sitting President :(
