Border crisis stymies Congress as GOP bashes Biden and Democrats spar internally over

Graham already backtracking on the idea of legalizing DREAMers.

Quote:

And yet even Republicans who have been open to more liberal immigration policies are shutting the door to that approach now as the party rails on President Joe Biden for not doing more to contain the crisis, meaning finding the necessary 60 votes in the evenly divided chamber to advance any immigration bill remains a daunting task.

The likely result: Legislative gridlock, especially on a comprehensive immigration bill resembling one passed out of the Senate with 68 votes eight years ago, with Republican advocates of that bill abandoning it now and top Democrats saying there's virtually no chance enough GOP senators will back a plan that includes a pathway to citizenship to the 11 million immigrants in the country illegally.
Quote:

"It is going to be very easy to do something if this administration wants to control the borders, which right now, they don't want to," said Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, when asked about moving piecemeal proposals.

"I've said for a long time: The right wants to load up 11 million people and get them out of the country or they ain't going to vote for the bill, and the left wants to legalize, or give everybody citizenship yesterday," Grassley said. "And you can't get 60 or 70 votes when that's what you're faced with."
Quote:

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and author of the 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill, told CNN that now isn't the time for legislation to legalize recipients of the DACA program.

"I am all for taking care of the Dreamers, but you don't want to take care of them and at the same time incentivize another way to legal immigration so the window right now to do anything doesn't exist because that flow on the border has to be controlled," Graham said.

Other Republicans say that any effort to legalize Dreamers or expand visas for farm workers will need to come with robust border security provisions, which could alienate progressives from backing a final deal.

"I think there are a number of us who are willing to work on immigration bills, but it does have to be very targeted and deploy some of the vetting practices we want to see," said Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa.

Let’s see what happens. I took that quote as him demanding robust border security with any effort to legalize. Say good bye forever to any clean bill. That’s just never going to happen.

Hopefully...I'm just sick of the same old excuses by the GOP. I think everyone understands it won't be a clean bill.

This is what republicans always do. They are doing this to damage joe Biden and the democrats politically. They don’t care about dreamers we are just pawns to them.

I agree with you. The 20 Senators will meet tomorrow. Let’s see what comes of it.

I cannot fathom this shit being kicked down the road even further.

Why not? Why has it reached critical mass in your opinion?
I can totally see it being kick down the road.

For those that have trouble reading between the lines: I am not for it being kicked down the road. I want a solution, but I can totally see nothing happening and am having a hard time seeing why now is different than any other time. What are you optimists seeing now that is clearly and drastically different than before and making you believe something will happen?
I see the same shit in a different toilet. That's all.

It could all be a smokescreen to raise the starting big for legalizing dreamers. They are playing the crisis to get the public on their side and support their tough immigration demands. Increase ICE+ Judges+Wall+increase funding+e-verify. They want to look like they are supporting America again and not insurrectionists.

Watch the end gaming is ... they want Trump's wall... Biden should give them the wall money... Then engrave BIDEN in it just to be spiteful.

We came close to being deported by a crazy asshole. What’s the point of making us wait 8 or 10 more years, especially since there is always a “border crisis “? Both sides say they want to address the issue but have policy differences.

You are welcome to be fearfully pessimistic. You aren’t going to convince me otherwise even if you shit gold and tell me you are a direct descendant of the prophet muhammed. I have told you so many times that reaching a policy victory will never ever be clear cut. Like really what is your expectation? That they all hold hands and sing kumbaya as an indicator that it will happen this time? This shit is always going to be complex. After so many years, when has it become any easier? Like are you waiting for a divine sign as a guarantee? You’re never going to get it.

Re: Border crisis stymies Congress as GOP bashes Biden and Democrats spar internally

I don’t think Graham is backing away yet; however, trusting him is difficult. I think CNN completely misinterpreted what Graham said. He is just emphasizing the point for border security. Until progressives get a grip of the Democratic leadership and resort to drastic measures, the far left will not see a clean bill. This is literally the best thing we can get and people on the left need to stop bitching about it.

You always incorrectly conflate being pessimistic with being fearful. This is not the first time. Someone who doubts isn't necessarily fearful or doubting out of fear.
>__>

You also didn't really answer my question. Us surviving Trump is not going to compel R's and D's to come together for a solution. I'm sure R's that could support us would love to answer your question and have a lot to say about why they'd like to have us wait another eternity for a solution.

It will be interesting how the GOP responds to movement and cooperates/fails to cooperate in the push for immigration reform as the next few weeks progress. The dynamic with Dems having power should be interesting.

Popcorn material. The process is still entertaining nonetheless. That's one of the reasons we all come and argue on here.

As much as you'd like this forum to be a Jesus camp circle jerk where everyone is faithful and on the same page... the process of getting to our destination, the struggle, difference of opinion is half the fun. It's what makes us Dreamers stronger and more resilient. The other half will be the solution... once we get to it. The Green Card is not what will make us strong. It's the road and struggle to the green card that makes us strong.

Dems won't vote for any border wall money.

Pro DA/Farm bills GOP House Representatives are now saying that some of them will oppose DA and Farm bill based on the border crisis.(Politico and Twitter sources)

House GOP leadership is whipping against the bills amongst it's members.

Dude, the caravans were reaching the southern border even under the Trump administration, and Trump and many GOP politicians were stubbornly pushing for a DACA deal. This border “crisis” will persist. No excuse for GOP to use this as a reason to vote no.

Be honest with you...it has ramped up even more at the moment, the flood gates have literally opened up...we can't let these random people in...seriously its getting very bad down there at the border. Dems need to make it absolutely clear these people will not be eligible for "Green cards" under their immigration reform plan.
