Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
Just thought I'd advise y'all about these...I never shopped at Old Navy before, but I'll be sure to never start.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0e80e8d235.jpg http://www.racialicious.com/2008/09/15/a-racist-sock/ They look pretty innocent, but the intent behind them is just gross. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
They're trying to cash in on the anti-immigrant sentiment... I never liked their clothes; now I really won't shop there...
|
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
Is it just me or does it only looks like a harmless sock?
Yes, the marketing might be "racist", but who cares about the marketing...I can see a guy buying this just for the way it looks without even reading the description. I never read the description on the stuff I buy. Come on. This is just pointless. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
It's just a pair of socks, with a helicopter on them. Just because they call it border patrol doesn't mean it's racist or anything like that.
Who cares about old navy anyways? all of their shirts are plain and say old navy in big letters on the front, 99% of them. So for them having a helicopter on a pair of socks is a big accomplishment. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
that's one ugly socks...
by the way... they should patrol the border. Yeah yeah I get that sick feeling in my stomach every time I see that commercial about "protection the country" crap comes on tv. But come on... if dream passes would you not support the border patrol? The border has to be secured and illegal immigration is wrong. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
Eh, I don't really think it's racist like the poster at Racialicious said. Just gross and not really something I would want my 6 mo. old wearing, if I had one.
Yes, I do think the border patrol should patrol the border, but I'm against the current incarnation of it and what it's main use is. Keeping drug mules and criminals out? By all means. But most of the time right now they're just keeping out workers and families. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
right my point is that they SHOULD keep the workers and families out too... I still think what my parents did to come here illegally was wrong, even though they had to do it.
|
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
I don't see the racial undertones. Some people are just too sensitive nowadays.
I wouldn't buy them because they're ugly. My BF has a BP shirt and he wears it just for shits and giggles. And he's a member of the Green Party. If that's not comedy I don't know what is. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
The point is that they're BORDER PATROL socks. The marketing reads: “fun socks feature military inspired embroidery sure to have your little man transforming everything he can get his hands on into an aerial assault vehicle capable of unstoppable fire power only to be used in the defense of the defenseless." Even if this wasn't designed with bad intentions (probably not), the ad is referencing the use of firepower to protect our borders in a positive light, as a way to defend justice and freedom and all that good shit. And against whom would we use this our justice-protecting firepower? Hmmm. Most of us don't even fucking blink when we read this ad, and for a reason. Of course people don't ever think about how BLINDLY accepting our society is of these ideas. We internalize racism without even realizing it. "Illegal" and "Mexican" have become racial slurs.
So no, objecting to the way the socks were advertised is not being too sensitive, and yes it is racist. But it's not your fault if you didn't catch it. I'm not for open borders btw, and I think they should be secured, but the point is that people immediately think "mexican families" and not "terrorists" or "drug trafickers" when they think about aliens crossing the border. And if even after thinking about it you don't see the connection between border patrol and immigration, you need to just get your head out of your ass. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
I will not buy any item from Old Navy.
|
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
just another crappy old navy product other than it being old navy i dont find it offensive.

And just to prove my point, every time I think of the border I think of people who literally swallow a bag of cocaine and then walk across the border and....*poop* it out of their system at the nearest bathroom. I'm honestly not trying to be funny, this is seriously what I think of when I think of the border. I think I just watch too much weird shit on TV.... |

2. Your Mexican/Asian comment is not funny either, it's actually racist and stupid. Stop watching that show because your post is resembling Mencia, it's obnoxious and idiotic. Those signs do exist on the freeways for a reason, and it's nothing to laugh at. God sometimes I hate being an asian when I read your posts... I wish I could denounce you from my ethnicity. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
that's why he is funny... because it is so stupid and idiotic... just in case you didn't get his joke lol. You don't laugh cause you agree with it, you laugh because it is so dumb and shallow. As for the signs it actually is kinda sad, behind the joke Carlos is actually complaining about the sign. I actually saw one on my socal trip with friends and I was shocked.
As for the joke I apologize if it was offensive. I live in the bay... I grew up with a black friend, white friend, and whole lot of Asians. Asians were the majority in my high school and due to the diversity we were very comfortable with racial jokes, no one really took it seriously. I didn't mean it in an offensive way and I am not saying what I said is okay. People here are just most lighthearted about racial issues, we don't make a big deal out of race, we just joke about it. I don't see why you overreacted by saying you would "denounce" me or wutever, lol. It wasn't even that racist. Go ahead I don't wanna be Korean anyway. |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
I know what you mean about racial jokes, within the inner circle. I'd be lying if I didn't do that with my friends (to the extreme I might add.) But keep in mind this is a public forum... and we wouldn't want our (large) group of hispanic supporters who visit to take it the wrong way, right?
Also, that "denouncing from the race" comment is a follow up to your posts, I think you've mentioned that you didn't want to be a Korean more than a few times :P |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
geronimo--agree to disagree. I admit I'm more liberal concerning immigration than most people on this board, but yeah.
Hopeful--I think you're probably in the minority on that. K-Man--oh thank god someone else finds Carlos Mencia as annoying as I do! |
Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
Anyone know if the other agencies have socks as well? I could really go for some Department of Transportation socks...or maybe even Department of Interior!

and the fact that he potrays himself as being 100% mexican when in reality he's half german and honduran and part mexican makes it sadder. his real name is Ned Arnel Mencía thats about the only thing funny about him. http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...18711943453918 |

Yeah I do like George Lopez better but he tends to be redundant with his jokes too or at least his show is. |

Re: Old Navy's Border Patrol socks
I think Mencia is a great comedian for the simple minded people, like me. When I watched his "Not For The Easily Offended" DVD is was laghing all the time. Specially when he made those comments about the people in the audience that didn't get his jokes.
He might or might not be "fully mexican", but honestly, who cares? I don't give a damn if he is german or not. As long as he keeps making me laugh I'll be renting his DVDs, even if 80% percent of his jokes are stolen. He is doing his job by making us laugh. That's what really matters...that's what is putting $$$ in his pockets and making our days a little brighter. |
