Florida Governor RonDeSantis is poised to sign tough penalties and restrictions that aims to obstruct the flow of illegal immigration to the state after the House approved the measure, (CS/SB 1718), in a mostly party line, 83-36 vote on Tuesday.

The new legislation strengthens employment requirements, bans local governments from contributing money to organizations creating identification cards for undocumented immigrants, bars driver’s licenses issued to non-citizens in other states from use in Florida and repeals a 2014 law that allowed undocumented immigrants to be admitted to practice law in Florida.

Employment requirements

The immigration package allows businesses to conduct random audits of businesses suspected of hiring undocumented workers and increases criminal penalties for human smuggling.

Transportation:
This part of the bill was rewritten because opponents initially feared that it could ensnare friends or family members driving a migrant across town. The bill now only applies to those transporting people from outside the country to Florida.

Immigration bill dialed back:

Companies with 25 or more employees will have to use the federal E-Verify system when hiring workers, expanding on a requirement set by the Republican-led Legislature in 2020 that is limited to public employers and contractors, which effectively exempted the state’s powerful agriculture industry.
Penalties for employers who don’t verify their employees’ status could face suspension of their licenses to operate.

IDs and driver’s licenses

Local governments will be banned from contributing money to organizations creating identification cards for undocumented immigrants, and driver’s licenses issued to non-citizens will be barred from use in Florida.

Opponents fear that this provision could cause confusion and lead to law enforcement profiling.

Health care

Hospitals receiving state and federal Medicaid reimbursements will be required to track how much money is spent on undocumented immigrants in emergency rooms.

Education

The new law repeals a 2014 law that allowed undocumented immigrants to be admitted to practice law in Florida.
DeSantis pushed for a tuition prohibition but couldn’t find the support to make it into the final legislation. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, said that several lawmakers served in 2014 when the Florida Legislature under then-Gov. Rick Scott extended in-state tuition to undocumented “Dreamers.”

the wording is clunky....either agri is still exempted, or it was back then and it no longer is. It reads to me like it still is exempted.

The scariest part about this is not accepting driver licenses from states that allow undocumented people to have a license. Does this really mean they will ticket/arrest someone there with a California or WA license? Those states should return the favor and not accept Florida licenses since florida is breaking reciprocity.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for illegal immigrants to get united country wide and demand them for permanent legal solution before they return to work. its time to fix everybody now and show them our strength

They tried this back in 2005 on May Day protests. A bunch of them were flying Mexican flags and that's what got all the news coverage. But yeah, if illegals actually stayed home and didn't work for a month, it would put the country at a standstill but then they can't afford to do that, and many live under the shadows so if they COULD do it, it would pretty much out them.

lets start by denouncing the bullsht "legalization for all or nothing" mentality first. citizenship for us DACA first, overhaul the entire immigration process, only give EADs to the rest with 0 chance of citizenship as punishment, fine them. and enforec E Verify EVERYWHERE.

These are essential workers. The solution is to legalize them, farmworkers, health workers, child workers, construction, and expand DACA to cover all Dreamers. Dreamers also fall under essential workers, so that takes care of the issue.

It is not cogent to me that a newly arrived person can just file for an EAD while someone who has been working and paying taxes here for years, is not eligible. It's exploitation.

Not sure I follow this. Are they saying that even if you got your DL from another state, you cannot drive in FL because it says temporary immigrant on it?

Yes only US citizens will be allowed to drive in FL based on the working of the bill....

remember those licenses that were given specifically to illegals in some states? those are the ones banned since they are marked.

however there are other states which have been giving licenses to anybody since forever. those are still valid.

So basically if it's not a REAL ID, it won't be recognized in Florida. A REAL ID's are identified by having the star in the upper right hand corner of your state issued drivers license or ID card.

I was thinking in a scenario where someone has an H1B status so they are here legally. But their license has an identifier where you can see they are not a US Citizen.

What sucks is that a lot of liberal US Citizens leaving Florida too so it will just make it more red. I guess the only benefit with more people both documented and otherwise leaving Florida is that in 10 years when they do another census, maybe they'll lose a few electoral votes...or perhaps their economy will take a hit but as long as Cubans vote Republican, nothing will change there.
