How many people work in the restaurant business

I'm sooo tired today. I like/hate busy days.... busy days=good tips BUT when I get home I'm dead, like today. I can barely feel my feet.

I always get nostalgic as I'm driving home because I think of how I'm stuck working as a server when I "could" be working in my career... Oh well. I guess this is one of those things that just makes you a stronger person, right?

So, what kind of restaurant do you guys work at? I work in a Chinese restaurant. It's funny, because we have a full bar and sell lots of wine... before working here I would have never guessed that people enjoyed eating chinese food w/ wine! And when people order a bottle of wine, we have to do this whole wine presentation.

I work at an Italian Restaurant right now, and yeah I know exactly how you feel, its a love/hate relationship I have for busy days. But I think I'm very lucky to have a flexible schedule that works with my school hrs. And honestly, out of all the disadvantages I think not being able to put down on my resume that I have been working since I was 15 years old and still graduating with honors from high school and keeping up a 4.0 now in college is what I dislike the most. I wish I could say i'd been working my butt off, but I'm afraid that being in my situation that will be more of a disadvantage for me than an advantage.

yo i know wat you mean, lucky for me i work in a mexican restaurant. its pretty cool most of the times, but when it gets busy it gets BUZY! ive been there for 3 years and i pretty much do everything from bussing tables, hosttessing, waiting on tables, wash dishes and even cooking when it gets crazy. lol they want me to bartend when i turn 21 but i think i might pass on that though. but the cool things about being a male server is when the cute girls come in to eat, thats when the real magic happens. lol

dude bartending... major tips!!!!! I would love to have that opportunity, it's not very common. I would totally take that chance. This is coming from a guy who doesn't drink an ounce of alcohol.

I work at a sushi joint, crappiest sushi joint in town... low tip, cheap asian customers and foreigners who doesn't speak English and have no manner. It is a love hate relationship, I've been working there for two years and it's depressing because it's demeaning work for me. However, I am so thankful that I even have a job right now and that this job has kept me afloat for past two years while I am going to school and helped me save ten grands.

I used to work at a Mexican restaurant in AZ about 3 years ago. Before I worked there, I would've never guessed how tiring the work can be. I could not sleep the first night because my feet hurt so badly. I went out the next day and bought super lightweight black shoes.

Also, I learned the value of tipping well at restaurants. Nothing worse than when cheap ass patrons would leave the few coins they got as change as your tip. .47 cents? Thanks!

well i thought of it but sometimes our bar is slow. plus it doesnt stay open late like other bars. it closes around the same time the restaurant does like at 9 and it would be hard to make room in my schedule with school. i work 4 days a week which is cool becuz i need time for studying. i make more money as a server then as a bartender. i would do it only if i had time. but about he demeaning part i know how u feel. i had offer of working at a architecture firm but becuz of my status i cant. sometimes i feel like im better then this and that i can be doing something else way more fulfilling. yet im still thankful and lucky that i just have a job.

I used to work at Jap restaurant. I dont know but I like to work at restaurant because you get a lot of benefit from it. For me, I used to get a lot of tips and my work place is chill so I didn't really need to work that hard.. And during break time, I always get free lunch or dinner. Thats cool part about it. I dont need to spend money on food when I used to work at jap restaurant. =D

I worked in a "french restaurant" as a dishwasher for a week right after graduating from high school. I worked from 10pm to 7am. I hated it. It is HARD work. So, I said, "fuck this" I quit on my 8th day in the job and got my old job back in the car wash. Then I got to college and the rest is history.

Oh my gosh .47 cents!! And I thought $2 was bad, hah... I too learned the value of tipping well. Now, whenever I go out to eat I always tip well, unless my server is rude.

I know what you mean. It sucks not being able to put our work experience down in our resume.

I have a lot of respect for dishwashers... it's a tough job. At my restaurant the dishwasher is this really old man, and I always feel bad when I see a HUGE load of dishes in front of him. Then he has people yelling at him to wash more dishes, blah, blah blah...

I've worked as a server in a few restaurants. A little tiresome if you work the whole day everyday, but other than that a pretty decent job if people tip well. There are a lot of crappier jobs out there, be grateful for what you have.

well i actually work in the "fast food' restaurant business, except as a manager, its still a tough job but not as bad as having to cook or clean other people's mess. and yes im very thankful for the job i've got.

Re: How many people work in the restaurant business

Hypothetically speaking...I used to work as a dishwasher a month or two ago. Some days were horrible, you'd come in and there would be dishes towering from all of the three sinks. To make it worse the sink itself is rather kind of low, and considering I'm over 6 feet tall I had to be hunched over the whole time, by the end of my shift my back was just killing. Other days though you would just pace back and forth back in the kitchen munching on hotwings and other fried delicacies, free food was the only part of the job I really liked. Pretty much every week i came in there I thought about quitting, I think I would've too at some point if I hadn't been laid off. I still feel bad for the owner though considering this was his first restaurant and he just opened it quite recently. I mean how bad do things have to be going for you that you need to lay off your dishwasher of all people?

^^ Maybe you should have been washing dishes instead of snacking on the "free food" :P lol jk

But I too work in a restaurant, and I've been in this type of business for about 5 years now and I'm pretty much used to working the long, busy hours.

I had a job in my cousin restaurant. It was HELL!! I was being exploited by my own cousin. I had to be at the restaurant at 3 am until 4 PM. The saddest part was having the tips go to him. I had class from 5:45 PM until 10 PM. I don't even know how I was able to keep up... I was fortunate to be offered a better job a month later...

wait. what? why?

I worked at a country club for a couple of years during undergrad. it sucked. hard. i hated every single day that i was there. yet, i had to do it to pay my way through school. I quit that stupid job about a month before i graduated with my bachelors. after that i got a nice paying comfy office job. i then had the great idea of giving that up and going back to school for my masters. now i'm looking for weekend work but refuse to go back to working at a restaurant. there don't seem to be many other options though. sigh.

Because according to him my hourly rate of 6.00 per hour was more than sufficient to include the tips. I was baking, grilling, dish washing, waiting on table and handle cash register form time to time for 6.00 per hour.

Hehe, the food really was free, as long as you don't treat the fridge as your own personal buffet I mean why not? I'm kind of surprised that there are restaurants that actually charge their kitchen staff if they want to get anything to eat, but i suppose there are all kinds of cheap asses out there who will count their pennies to a fraction.

Re: How many people work in the restaurant business

I had such an awful day at work today :( I got yelled at for a really stupid reason, and included in all the yelling was the phrase "This is NOT a Mexican restaurant" (I work in a Chinese restaurant). I was offended and pissed off. I did nothing wrong!!

At the restaurant where I work we have what you call crispy noodles, and they are the equivalent of chips and salsa (at a mexican restaurant, hah) and the reason I got yelled at was because I gave my customers TOO MANY... WTF! I only gave my customers what they ASKED for. I thought the purpose of a server was to keep the customers happy... PLUS what was I supposed to say/do... tell the customers "Sorry but you have eaten too many crispy noodles. THIS IS NOT A MEXICAN RESTAURANT." Seriously. Ughghghghghgh!!

I really need DREAM to pass because my stupid job is going to drive me insane! I have a freakin' college degree YET I'm getting yelled at over serving "too many" crispy noodles. :(

I hated working at restaurants exactly because of this. People (both the boss and the customer) demean you so much.

Tennis, im not in your shoes but i would def try to look for another job (maybe in another restaurant?) you shouldn't have to take this abuse regardless of status.

I hope things work out

Oh that sucks, too many crispy noodles? Geez.

I worked in a restaurant for a summer, it wasn't fancy, so I had to take orders, serve, and buss the tables too. It was ok when there weren't too many people, but sometimes I was the only server trying to keep six tables happy at the same time.

Now I have a degree and I'm cleaning houses...It's alright, at least I get to make my own schedule and nobody really bothers me.

lol, I feel you bro. Don't be offended it wasn't racist. They were just admiting how cheap Chinese restaurants are and how generous mexican restaurants are :) For the chinese dreamers don't be offended, I am asian and I got tons of chinese friends lol. Too many crispy noodle lol.
