8,000 postcards- 20 senators – 30 days

START DATE: Monday, April 6 (we need to get more numbers!)
INDEX CARDS can be used as post cards!! If they are 4" by 6" they will be sent via the standard postcard rate of 27 cents. Buy 100 pack of index cards from the 99cent store.

TOTAL over 4 weeks:

1235 postcards

SHOUT OUT TO DIANNELA FOR SENDING 440!

The number has changed to 15 senators instead of 20. This is because the following senators will not accept mail from people outside of their constituency:

Specter, Arlen R-PA
Greg, Judd, R-NH
Landrieu, Mary D-LA
Byrd, Robert D-WV
Graham, Lindsey R-SC

ORIGINAL POST BELOW THIS LINE:
****************************************************************************************************
I don’t know if there is an official postcarding campaign going on, but I just want to throw this idea out there for a DAP campaign.

Besides flooding senators with phone calls and voice mails, we NEED to ABSOLUTELY FLOOD their mailboxes with written pleas.
I’ve decided to commit myself to sending 20 postcards each week…one for each of the 20 senators who’s position on the dream act we aren’t entirely sure about. That will put me at a total of 80 postcards at the end of 4 weeks, and if 100 people commit to this, we can get out 8,000 post cards in just about a month.

I know that there is an official Dream act postcard, and that last year over 600 were sent out. But I don’t think this is enough in these crucial times. Sending massive amounts of pleas in writing can be even more effective than the usual phone calls which only reach senators’ assistants. We have to turn the notch up this time around! We can’t keep using our fear of putting ourselves out there as an excuse for not doing SOMETHING.

My game plan:
INDEX CARDS can be used as post cards!! If they are 4" by 6" they will be sent via the standard postcard rate of 27 cents. Buy 100 pack of index cards from the 99cent store. And if you are afraid they will track down your return address...then don't put it.

100 index cards: $1- $2
cost of stamps: 27cents each.
total to send 80 over 4 weeks: $21.60
total send 40 over 4 weeks: $10.80
total for 20 over 4 weeks: $5.40

Buy blank ones 4x6 inches. And on one side you can put "pass the dream act in 09" in big bold black or red ink, and on the other side write you message, and the address of the senator.

You can write:
Dear Senator _________. I am writing to ask you to support the Dream Act. I believe all children should have the opportunity to educate themselves, achieve their goals, and succeed in life. Sincerely, _________

Dear Senator ---------__________. I would like to express my support for the Dream Act. I believe education and opportunity is our only way forward as a nation. It doesn’t help anyone if a significant population of our youth is left in the dust without access to either.
Sincerely, _____________

These are just examples.
I will scan a picture of my set Monday to let everyone know how I designed mine if people are in need of ideas!

Then…after making 20, put it in a mailbox and…DONE. Repeat again next week. You represent one action, but multiplied by 100, this is 2,000 postcards going out per week, and it speaks A LOT.

Please join !!! I’ll be sending out my 20 every Tuesday….with people choosing different days, the senators will be overwhelmed, EVERYDAY.

You can print your own, several versions here:

http://dreamactivist.org/take-action-2/postcards/

We can also send them other things, I don't know what but something symbolic to catch their attention.

Hey!

This is a great idea!! Quick question (I know it may be kind of dumb) but do I have to write my address on it or could I just leave it blank? It kind of freaks me out to have them know where I live.

BTW, I'll be sending mine out on Wednesdays.

Don't freak out about putting your address on there, staffers have better things to do than to send people looking for you.

I think everyone who is a member and is planning to do this should post a reply that they are participating, so we'll know what kind of numbers we have going. A simple "I'll do it on Monday" or something should be cool :)

If you're not a member, and just patrol the Forums like I've done for years, please send out postcards anyway.

And don't forget to get family members and friends to do it too. This is a very easy project to get a bunch of people together one night, make all the postcards, and then everyone just has to remember to post 'em out on whatever day each week!

I'll still be writing mine, ink is expensive to print out the ready made Dream postcards. Plus I think bold wording in red would get more attention!

I'll try to get someone to take to me Walmart tomorrow, if not, I'll start next week.

This seems like a very easy thing to do, I don't have a lot of money, which might also be others mumblings about not doing this, but at the cost of an outfit or a night out, I think we can all afford to be part of this very simple project.

The cost of my freedom and life: Priceless.

I can't stress enough how flooding people with mail can call their attention...The effort to do this is small for each person but if we ORGANIZE a simple strategy, we can make things happen.

I think other people are focusing on on the fence committee members, and that's fine, but other people need to be working on the rest of the on the fence congresswomen and men. In another thread Juanybear said somthing important, advice that Senator Durbin told him, and that's: These senators decide on their positions early.. that is why we have to get to them now, even though they haven't seen the bill yet.

So far we have 3 people doing this...

You can leave it blank. There is no law that says you have to put a return address on mail.

OK-----so i just looked into and, and INDEX CARDS can be used as post cards!! If they are 4" by 6" they will be sent via the standard postcard rate of 27 cents. So if cost is what's holding people back, you can buy 100 pack of index cards from the 99cent store. And if you are afraid they will track down your return address...then don't put it. Seeing they "pass the dream act" sign is enough to turn their heads"...as long as it's coming in bulks.

So I'm changing the new cost for this project to each person:

100 index cards: $1- $2
cost of stamps: 27cents each.
total to send 80 over 4 weeks: $21.60
total send 40 over 4 weeks: $10.80
total for 20 over 4 weeks: $5.40

Any idea how we can get the word out about this? I want everyone to know about this and send out postcard too! I don't think three a week is going to do much, lol :)

Re: 8,000 postcards- 20 senators – 30 days

Well, hopefully, now that the price tag has changed, people will come around. I'll just keep bumping this thread up until more people decide to hop on board. Hopefully we can get the number up to 20 people this week, before sending the first batch out.

This is something that is cheap and easy to do, and you don't need to join a prominent immigrant rights organization to be a part of the action, but people just need to feel like other people are doing it before they decide to do it too..
