Research for DAP and earn advocacy points

We're facing a problem here and I'm turning to our community for a solution.

We're out to bring some determinism into the DREAM Act campaign. We've created a system that intelligently determines district targets in the whole nation based on legislator's stance on DREAM, immigrant population in the district, election results, and other hard evidence. This is tedious work that is typically done manually (read typically not done at all) by groups nationwide.

Houston, we have a problem

We're having a tough time finding one important data set for determining targets. Namely, concentration of educator unions and associations in different parts of the country. Teachers and professors are our biggest sympathizers and supporters by far; we need this data.

Based on my calculations, to collect this data nationally it will cost us a thousand dollars or more.

You can help us save that money

We need one volunteer to make a Excel or OpenOffice spreadsheet of educator unions and associations in New Jersey only.

The only data needed is this:
  • Name of the organization
  • 9 digit zip code of its location in New Jersey
If the organization has multiple locations in NJ just add multiple entries with the same name and different zip.

- OR -

Find an existing, free to use, data set of this information.

We're going to award 100 advocacy points plus 2 points for every organization that you find (eg. if you find 20 locations you'll get 140 points, if you find 50 you'll get 200 points, etc.) You have to submit the work no later than 5 days after accepting.

Any takers?

Thanks for stepping up to the task.

YGanan, the file you sent me via email is the correct format but is unfortunately incorrect data.

Another way to look at the task:
We are looking for teacher and professor unions (click for an example) and professional associations who are potential supporters of the DREAM Act (DO NOT include schools and universities). Includes national unions and associations that have offices in New Jersey. If the organization does not provide a nine digit zip, you can map their address on Google Maps and get the full 9 digit zip there.

Since YGanan called NJ first, would you be interested in doing Pennsylvania for us? Same task, equally important state.

A more exhaustive version of what you posted is what we need. Except the final product has to be in Excel and has to have a nine digit zip (if the org does not provide one, you can map their address on Google Maps and get the full 9 digit zip there). We need the whole 9-digits or we wont be able to determine what congressional district they're in. Also, include national unions and associations with offices in PA and do not include online only organizations.

Hey Nick, I'm doing a research project for the Southern California area regarding services available to the public. One way we're compiling the information is through the CDBG list of recipients. I contacted the appropriate departments in the cities I need the information from, but some aren't coughing up the info. Do you have experience with requesting "public information," but the city withholding it from you?

Re: Research for DAP and earn advocacy points

Some of the sources I was using had conflicting information on the representatives for some incorporated cities. Is there a way to look up the congressional, district (and assembly?) representatives through a zip code?

Sorry about the lack of terms. I'm not a PS major at all, and I don't have the excel with all the data with me lol.

Unfortunately I don't have that experience.

This may be obvious but try pointing them to the Freedom of Information Act http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom...ited_States%29

But ultimately, it's just a matter of calling or visiting the right people until they give you what you want.

EDIT: If you can share your research when you're done with it that will be great.

Re: Research for DAP and earn advocacy points

Hey Nick,

Thanks for replying. What I'm refering to is that in the state of NJ, people that do not have a legal status have children to prevent them from being deported. That's as much informed they are.
I will gladly help with anything the DAP might need. You stated something different when you posted this, then when you received what I sent, it was not what you had asked for.

I was not aware what you were looking for was "teacher and professor unions and professional associations who are potential supporters of the DREAM Act".

You just mentioned the word 'supporters' then added 'of the DREAM Act' after that on your second postings (I like specifics the first time when someone posts something as important).

PS: hopefully, this back and forth proves to you that you need to be a bit more specific when it comes to asking (the community) what you need. And keep in mind there isn't any task I wont help DAP with. Just be clear.

Don't email me either, keep it clear and open so everyone can see what we're going through in this site and in the real world (lack of understanding). 'LADreamfriend' understood the same thing I did, so I know it's not a mistake from my ability of comprehension.

Understand?

Sincerely,

YGanan

@YGanan... I think the confusion is re: associations/ groups vs. schools themselves, the list I posted was of associations, not schools.

@Nick, I am happy to take on PA, but when are you lookingto have it by? I am helping organize a march in LA for the 23rd, so in the next 5 days might be impossible. If you can give me 10 days, I can get you the excel with 9 digit zips. Let me know how that deadline works for you on this thread or in PM.
