What if someone steals your SSN or Identity?

Is it harder for us to get our identity stolen than a US citizen?
Just because we have the government agencies on our backs.
Let's say our SSN gets stolen DHS has control over it.
Can't work without a permit and that number is linked with EAD

Everything is pretty much tied up. So I'm guessing if someone tries. They wouldn't get far.

Most of the time when your SSN is stolen, it's to open up credit cards and file fraudulent tax returns on your name.

This affects your credit etc...

DHS don't really care about your financial matters.

Everything is harder for us. A citizen will be inconvenienced and has to go jump through some hoops. For some of us *ahem*, it's impossible to get some of our documents again.

10 Years ago I got a call from a bank saying they were from the fraud department and someone was trying to get a credit card in my name in California. I asked them to give me a verifiable phone number to call back before I could give any information to them and I googled it and sure enough, it was the right number...except they were closed by then and I couldn't get through!

So the next day I got in touch and it seemed that they had all my information (ssn, etc.) EXCEPT for my mother's maiden name and that's what triggered it. My ID situation was in much better shape then so I went to the Sheriff's office to file a report just in case it would turn into something where I would need to defend myself later and that seemed to be the end of it.

I'm not sure if it was a random attack or targeted attack. I did have an ex in that California city and she did know a lot of my information except for the SSN but then her sister used to work at a cell phone company I had an account with so it's plausible that in the early 2000's before identity theft was big, she could have pulled off the information. Then again, back then we used to put our social security numbers in every paper we turned in for school too (as it was our school ID number) so god only knows. It just sucked not to be able to fight back and dig deeper.

Equifax says my info was stolen along with half the population of U.S. so I don't think we have more safeguards than citizens. When I'm offered credit cards, no one asks me to verify my ssn. They just ask for the number and my driver license.
