Question about SS#

After being approved for a work permit, EAD, and now applying for a social security number, I'm wondering. What can and can't you use it for, for example? Can you basically use it for everything a normal US citizen would use it for? I know driver's licenses and opening bank accounts are okay to apply for with them.

If it's possible, I want to fly domestically within the US someday, but I'm wondering what I need first. Or if doing so, you actually need one at all for anything.

Hmm..I know some people who ride planes (domestically) using their DL or state ID.

Re: Question about SS#

you don't need ss to fly... social security is used for one thing and one thing only... social security insurance / retirement / disability

everything else is just a gimmick and used only to verify your identity (like your name or date of birth)
now two people can have same name and DOB so they need to add another security measure and it's SS

The government will not care who / how your number is used as long as it does not interfere with it's real purpose... social security insurance

Now when you work they NEED your SS number because your employeer and you are responsible for making payments to your social security insurance. Kind of like making a payment to any other insurance service.

Hope this helps...

Re: Question about SS#

You can use it but lots of things will require GC or citizenship so that's only the limit you have. You can use it to get DL or open credit since its always nicer to use a legit SSn than a ITIN number

To fly within USA you just need DL, ID's, or valid passport. Theres no need for SS# unless your states require SS# for DL or IDs.

What does "GC" stand for though?
