1098-t

Can anyone please explain to me what this tax form is? Don't you need a SSN for this? I got it from my school last year but I really don't know what it is. Its the 1098-T. Would really appreciate it.

Isn't it about your tuition? You will get more of those once the semester ends/tax season starts. If you are not being claimed by anyone as a dependent, you might get a nice refund.

Okay. I never did anything with it when I got it :/ I thought it was a mistake or something. But how do I go about getting the refund? No one claims me as a dependent.

Basically the 1098-t shows how much you paid for tuition. You will have to wait until it is tax season to file and hopefully get a refund. For example, I filed on my own after I turned 18. I was working and going to a university and paying out of pocket (in-state however) I usually received the 1098-T, early Feb and filed my taxes. Depends how many allowances you claim (if you work), income, when you file taxes to receive a refund.

Okay thanks for that. I've never filed taxes, never had an itin. I don't work so didn't have the
reason to. My dad payed for school but he doesn't live in the u.s. Do I need an itin # to file? And do I have to file for it with taxes even if I don't work?

Thanks for answering these questions. I'm a complete noob when it comes to filing taxes.

I was given the W-7 Application for ITIN form from my school because I don't have some kind of number on file with them. I'm kinda confused as how I'm suppose to file it. But I need it to get a proper tuition bill statement (1098-T). I am not claimed as a dependent by anyone.
