TAX Filing

Has anyone filed their tax yet? I have a few questions below:

1. Do we still have to file the Form 8965 - Health Coverage Exemption because I thought this only relates to Obama Care and given that the program is no longer effective.

2. Are we allowed to claim America Opportunity and Life Learning Credits? I'm a little hesitant because we are not resident nor citizen but for tax purposes, we are considered resident.

Any suggestions?

Healthcare mandate was still in effect in 2017. It won't be required in 2018 if I understand correctly, so yes, you still need to file the exemption.

I use Turbotax, so it automatically decided I am exempt from the healthcare requirement. I also received the Life Learning Credit for taking 2 courses in Community College for fun (It actually saved me from having to pay this year)

If you file Form 8965, do you leave the the box for "Full-year health care coverage or exempt" empty or do you have to check it? This is for tax year 2018

You’re claiming the exemption for the entire year, so yes. The exemption code is (C) for those who don’t know, it’ll say U.S Citizens living abroad in some services like CreditKarma tax but it is still the same code for “not lawfully present aliens”

Thanks, just for clarification, do you leave it blank in Form 1040?

The box for "Full-year health care coverage or exempt" in the new Form 1040.

Ok, I had to look up my form. The box is not checked
