CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
I have some questions about the CUNY Assessment Test in Mathematics
I am exempt from the Math assessment exam based on my High School Regents score. However, the following is stated in the CUNY website: "all new students - whether or not they are math proficient - are required to take the CUNY Assessment Test in Mathematics. Test results will be used to place students in the appropriate mathematics course at their college". Since I am exempt from the CUNY Assessment Test in Mathematics, when and how can I schedule an appointment for the Placement exam? How do these two exams differ, and what else do I need to know before I can register for classes? Thanks. |
Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
I should add, that I called the testing office and the lady had a heavy accent that I could barely understand and she advised me to call the Admissions office (WTF!). So unless I call again tomorrow and speak with a different person, any information you guys can provide will be highly appreciated.

Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
I know that you can exempt from english assessment test if you pass english regent with a 75 or above, I'm not sure about the math assessment test. I took the math assessment 2 years ago, maybe they have changed rules now, but they required every freshman to take the test. I got 90s on my math b regent and pass the AP calculus BC exame, I still had to take the assessment test.

Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
Thanks Melody, it seems I may need to take it.
I just don't understand why that lady told me I didnt and why the website even bothers telling you, you are exempt. So the Assessment and Placement exams for Math are basically the same thing? |
Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
Placement Tests
Preparing for the CUNY Assessment Test (CAT) is strongly encouraged as these tests will determine your placement in Mathematics and/or English (Reading/Writing) courses. Four-Year Colleges: All students admitted to a CUNY four-year college must take the CAT in Mathematics before enrolling in the college, regardless of New York State Regents, SAT, ACT, and/or AP scores in Mathematics. Test results will be used for placement purposes in the appropriate mathematics course. Community Colleges: All students will be asked to take the CAT in Mathematics and/or English for placement in first year courses. After you submit your Commitment Tuition Deposit, the college will send your testing date/location via email or standard mail, so be sure to check your email/mail from the college frequently. Note: In some cases, your testing information may arrive prior to your financial aid award package. http://www.cuny.edu/admissions/under...eadmitted.html It seems like they are the same thing, but do call the school to make sure |
Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
you can also ask your high school guidance counselor, at this time of year, college offices are too busy to be patient to answer anything

Re: CUNY / BMCC ; Assessment vs. Placement Exams
What school did you got to Melody? Called BMCC again and they told me, again, that I do not need to take the test. WHY does it say that on the website though! UGH

I don't think you can exempt from math placement.
