Meet face to face with lawmakers
Our first and primary goal is to make sure that every member who is in
support of DREAM shows it by becoming a co-sponsor. We are in prime time right now for making this happen, from Monday April 6th to Friday April 17th members will be in recess. For us this means that all of the members will be in their home offices and available for meetings with, us, their constituents, i.e. no need to go to DC to see your rep, you can see them at home!! The Action: Schedule a meeting -- face to face -- with your senators AND representative. A total of three meetings, one with each of your two senators and one with the representative from the district you live in. The Ask: Is your member a co-sponsor? <http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102541507740&s=3204&e=001YYLKN44BrIPncnLPDwZ8FrtWzhMnDQy16GMCxPTGz7xfmD4Pw7muYax2u5z80TKPDqcDa0HlNRBvEvIgbHp1pNYrUrWogtTKmu5zrQnH8qliru8E4Hje9gAL7UD4kLoR-ZEm6arJxvzSvc3M7vbbmth2zBsbpbDLUwvAJrQ7-t_a1bO8YASKaA==> No? Ask that they co-sponsor the bill. Yes? Ask that they become a champion for the bill by urging other members to also co-sponsor the bill. The How: How to schedule an appointment: 1. Call your members local office and ask to speak with the scheduler. 2. Introduce yourself as a constituent who understands the member will be home on recess and that you want to set up an appointment to meet and discuss his/her position on Immigration, namely the DREAM Act. 3. Let them know you have a written 'request for an appointment<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102541507740&s=3204&e=001YYLKN44BrINWV49mesnbyh4JIPptCrLAEuVMRepFNy4fYXt7_JDbnC7Z417JNE8E_TBH-rsPRILrPyIR3dWcgzwPVqBOcZX1rSYwGp-XZIJJMy7B5NSqv0p-cRTv9dJvsN1kDRyvJ-wn4Mo6fsswugJJJkCJb4D7h7QhRvZezwWw8Z6gGeH-ihzakS_K-YcS>' letter available that you will E-Mail to them upon being given the schedulers E-Mail address. 4. Follow-up in a day or so with the scheduler to check on the status of things. 5. Let us know the time and date of your appointment as we will coordinate with others to call your member while you are in the office meeting with them. We'll make sure they don't forget about DREAM. **Once you have the information from #3 complete the below letter -- fill in the blanks and change names to match that of member you want to see -- and E-Mail it to the scheduler. (Letter found here: http://dreamactivist.org/wp-content/...letter-pdf.doc) The "I am nervous": Don't be, chances are even though the member is in district you will not get to meet with him or her, but instead you will meet with an aide -- essentially a clerk to the member. Oftentimes these aides are just recent college graduates and so just picture yourself talking to a close friend about an issue you are passionate about. **Also, this meeting should not be done alone so you should definitely ask a few friends to come along. If you really want to go and can't find someone to go with you then let us know as we can connect you with others in your region. The Meeting: Your meeting will go something like this, just go through and fill in the blanks. - ***Lobby day script***<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102541507740&s=3204&e=001YYLKN44BrIN-RbJOEDE4Br6MZJ5iHi_UVF2Ufbm1wked2g_oaAKfN_zZk7cDZ2U4-q56pMJZXmtVSPNR-ZLeo0p0ZuS1U2VnnqCfCola_f46ZNZqv7lRIe1XLoOCAMm8qC0UpWiBbBQDqnukzO1-RDC5tceNEpKD1NSbTogrAXu5rpxxvrOqNlVa4iD7oV8a> The Targets: Use the handy NCLR link<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102541507740&s=3204&e=001YYLKN44BrIO7ijzj_LFvd4jhaCcUFfOcKNGooHZTtsAURBeUE1-uSnZRyNO2Jry0BkEsZ766I3M5jTmEVRLAkaOibyAHSc9lDYc05Lug4HB-hSbNSgmcfCJqnv5n2sgs0JlHy69M77E=>to find your legislative targets. If Congress fails to act this year, another entire class of outstanding, law-abiding high school students will graduate without being able to plan for the future, and some will be removed from their homes to countries they barely know. This tragedy will cause America to lose a vital asset: an educated class of promising immigrant students who have demonstrated a commitment to hard work and a strong desire to be contributing members of our society.
