Paying taxes comes back to bite illegal immigrants
Quote:
But this brings up an important point, we should all learn to do our own taxes. Tons of people on here do their own taxes and can answer questions and we have several accounting majors on here who can put up guides on how to do them. You'll save money and learn a new skill :) Just monitor this carefully, everyone should pay their taxes and we're not letting some media whore who graduated at the bottom of his law school class stop us. |
Re: Using a Tax Preparation Service Could Get You Deported, Do Your Own Taxes!
Turbo Tax is something i recommend, its very easy to set-up and self explanatory when is preparing it themselves. I would say I did mine in 15-20 min, maybe even less.

I find it hard to believe that doing your taxes with a company can get you deported. first of all they don't ask anything regarding your imm status. you may say that the know who is an "illegal" because of using the ITIN. however not everyone who uses an ITIN is illegal since it is also available to US citizens who don't want to use their SSN.
I have used H&R Block for about 5 years now and nothing has ever happened. |

Don't be retarded, the charges were identify theft for people who used fake SS#, but used ITIN to pay taxes. It's NOT the same thing as many of us who pay taxes using an ITIN, that's not an identify theft. As long as you're not using someone else's ss#, there's no reason not to use 3rd party for tax purposes. Can one of the mods change the thread title since it's misleading/naive/propaganda-ish? |

^^^
juang, clearly you didn't read the article. the issue is not so much the fact that we are filing our taxes with a tax preparer, but the fact that an incident has occurred in which the records of a specific tax preparer have been sized by law enforcement. i had already posted the article, buy ygaa posted it again. this could have potential ramifications for us. up until now, the IRS doesn't really cooperate with DHS on matters of immigration. how the case in the article you didnt read is decided could potentially affect us. at best, the case could be decided in favor of us and then things would be ok like they are no. at worse, it would be unsafe for us to use tax preparers because then their records could be seized. clearly that could lead ICE right to individuals. at even worse, the IRS and DHS could have more communication. not all of us have SSN to protect us. as for the difference you see between a SSN and a ITIN, i hate to break it to you, but you're wrong. USC and permanent residents are taxed on income made both here and abroad, in effect subject double taxation (there are deductions and credits that can help alleviate the tax liability). any who, for those of us who aren't LEGAL permanent residents (ie non-resident aliens) we are only taxed on income earned within the US, hence why we would technically be able to file under a SSN or an ITIN. since we don't qualify for a SSN, the only other option available is use of an ITIN. the advantage of an ITIN is that you don't need to have legal presence within the US (the reason why you can't use it for proof of work eligibility). if you have a SSN, you're supposed to file with it if you have a tax liability because otherwise it's called tax evasion. the last time i checked, that's a felony. i only felt like acknowledging you because i don't want people getting scared and then not filing their taxes or thinking that your opinions are fact. taxes are quite easy to file yourself. if anyone needs a little help or has a question, please feel free to pm me. accounting is one of my majors and i'm my GPA is nearly perfect. =] |
Re: Using a Tax Preparation Service Could Get You Deported, Do Your Own Taxes!
mmm. I remember a long time ago (back in CoSA) someone posted an article regarding the history of the ITIN and who can get one.
I remember the article said it had been created in the 1970's after civil complains about the gov. using the SSN as a "tracking" number. But in recent decades it was "made public" so that people who are not eligible for a SSN will be able to file their taxes (as well as US citizens). Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe I'm not remembering right. Now I've search for that article, but can't find it. According to this: http://www.nilc.org/immsemplymnt/ITI...r_2004-web.pdf it was created in 1996 just for tax purposes for people that are not eligible for a SSN And according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITIN the ITIN can also be used by US citizens who do not want to use their SSN. Of course, we all know that Wikipedia is not a reliable source and that college professors do not accept any information with Wikipedia as it's source. Well, if anyone knows or remembers of what I'm saying, please correct me if I'm wrong. This article was posted in CoSA on its golden years (circa 2003-2004) |

Please don't listen to Kman, he doesn't know what he's talking about. There is nothing stopping another attention seeking prosecutor from doing the same. We should wait it out and see how it plays out in the courts but more importantly stay away from tax prep services even if this wasn't going on. They prey on immigrants and you are throwing money down the drain.
I'll teach you all to do your taxes, it's very easy once you know how to do it. You'll be covering your ass from attention whore politicians, saving money, and learn a life long skill  |
Re: Using a Tax Preparation Service Could Get You Deported, Do Your Own Taxes!
lol, how do you know I don't pay taxes? You have this dysfunction of turning assumptions into facts and it's so retarded... usually I try to stay out but sometimes it's too much, like when you say illegal immigrants on average travel more than citizens by air.... jesus christ.
Everyone here knows you have severe paranoia when it comes to anything that could jeopardize the immigration status, don't try to scare others into not using a CPA because you can't risk your own situation of ICE finding out a pending case or whatever. There are others here with far worse situation than you, whether it's pending deportation or otherwise. |
Re: Using a Tax Preparation Service Could Get You Deported, Do Your Own Taxes!
I heard from my cousin's friend's uncle's brother that someone got caught by an ICE agent at the beach while petting her friend's cat. We should probably stop going to the beach altogether... oh, and stop petting cats because that could also get you deported...
