College Help
Can someone please help with all the information on how I can get into college without valid status?

Re: College Help
Most likely, you'll have to apply as an international student for tuition purposes. If you're in California, AB540 will allow you to attend college as a resident if you graduated from a California high school.
In general, no school can deny attendance based on the fact that you're undocumented. The problem is tuition. See this thread for states that give in-state tuition: http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=3720 |
Re: College Help
hey fashion.....
i am also going to start applying to college this fall. i am starting to work with a couple of people here (who will also be applying) so we can help each other along the process. pm me so i can give you my info. what state are you in btw? and do you want to go into community college or 4yr university? just remember you need to take sat/act, there's a minimum gpa, and depending on where you go, you might need to apply as an international student, and that will need more forms :P |
Re: College Help
I am currently attending a 4 year private instituation, but after applying to about a dozen schools and getting accepted to all except for 2 in various states, it is very much possible to get into college, its just paying that becomes the challenge.
first of all, you must let them know about your status and they will tell you how to go from there. (they might tell you to go ahead and apply as a domestic as was a case for me in at least one of the schools). The schools that I got accepted to where located in places like seattle, washington, new york, new jersey, massachussets, florida and illinois. Some schools required the potential international students that are not coming from abroad to come up with a person that was willing to support them through the four years of college and in one case they wanted to me to send a bank statement demonstrating enough funds to at least cover the four years of tuition in full ([all 260k] needless to say I did not end up going there). More commonly they asked for a sponsor that was willing to put their credit in the line for the student. in at least one of the schools I actually managed to secure a scholarship, and in others i got in as an international student but they did not really give me any further instructions as having a person sponsor me or demonstrating ability to pay the tuition. So it varies, but it all depends on the school. I would research the institution first for any sign of support to lack towards students in our situation. I wish you guys luck going about this. |

You can get into any school, but your best option my be private. Unless any of those state colleges offer to give in-state tuition publicly to immigrant students it is also likely that the cost of private and state colleges might be close. |

Every college is different, and every state is different, so you have to talk to each individual college and find out where they stand on having undocumented students. I'd say do a search and look around the forum and you'll find more information (we've talked about this subject extensively). Also, unless you live in one of the 10 states that allows undocumented students to pay in-state tuition, your best bet is a private college. |
