So I just got a summons for jury duty

Lucky me, apparently my name got selected from a DMV database (only possible way I'd imagine) and I'd be more than happy to do my part as a "citizen", but we all know just the kind of citizenry that we are a part of. Question is though, a quick google search reveals that not even legal permanent residents can serve on a jury, they specifically require you to be a US citizen (correct?) I thought about checking the "speaka no english" checkbox and sending that in, however I'm going to have to renew my license in about a month so and I don't want that sitting on my record. The other option is admitting that I'm not a citizen, which shouldn't really be a problem in and of itself of course, but for obvious reasons I'm paranoid about it.

So does anyone have any experience dealing with this sort of situation? I'm not sure how to go about this, and the state is MI btw.

My dad got one but he ignored it. Also my friend who is on a student visa simply checked that he was not eligible for jury duty (I think there is a check box in there)...

Just send it back and let them know you are not a United States Citizen.

I didn't want to make a new topic knowing one is already here.

My mom recently got a 2nd Juror questionnaire (reminder), she is not a US Citizen.

There is an option to choose if you are a US Citzien. Either

YES

or

No

If NOT you MUST send in a current US VISA, Passport etc to show you are here legally.

Now the real question is... since she does not have a US visa or passport and she is not a US citizen which option would be best to choose? Either lying or putting down NO and not sending any documents.

Claiming you're a citizen is a big no no, she can pretty much kiss her future status adjustment goodbye if she checks that box. What I did was attach my I-130 receipt as my lawyer suggested and sent that in, however since we don't know what your mother's case is like the best answer most people will give you here is talk to a lawyer. A couple hundred bucks is a small price to pay to make sure no one actually comes looking for her to ask why she isn't responding.

My father delayed as long as he could but he eventually got his 3rd notice and checked NO and didn't send any documents, and also there was a space for a reason why he shouldn't be on it. He just wrote that he doesn't speak english well enough as someone else here mentioned. There was no problem and he hasn't gotten one since. Basically he got a pass for another 4 years.

Never ever, ever, ever say that you're a US citizen. But definitely send it back in. The 3rd notice was a little scary, you get one that has like red letters on saying that a bench warrant will be used for your arrest if you don't respond to the notice within 30 days or something like that.

Thanks for sharing your side of the story. I will have my mom do that if a 3rd letter comes in the mail. Also, thanks String for your input.
