Hello! New To Site, My Story
Hello All!
I am so incredibly happy to have found so many other people like me, and not only in the sense of being undocumented, but sharing similiar stories. I was born in Kenya, Africa, brought to the states when I was only 3 years old. My mother was pregnant with my sister when we came and had her in America, she who faces no problem :-( My mother later passed away from kidney failure when i was 13, and we moved to stay with my uncle. I never even knew I was in a situation at all, until I was 16 and was ready to take my drivers ed. To this day I'm not certain the whole story, but... apparently I was brought on my mothers passport as a minor, but she used a different name and d.o.b. However she was able to get me a ssn (which has my real name and d.o.b), which is stamped unable to work.. but in essence is still a valid ssn. So my uncle was able to reproduce my birth certificate with my correct d.o.b., but for so long i was stuck because of the passport issue. My uncle and his wife, have tried various things, but have been really slow about it.. they also seem to not want to tell me everything. I just want to move on and start fresh. I will be graduating with my bachelors in science in December, and really want to go to med school. I'm 23 years old, and for this long, lawyers advised that I wait on immigration reform. I'm currently in the process of getting a kenyan passport for use of identification, but i'm really praying on the dream act. With all this said, can anyone give me advice on my situation... I need some fresh outside advice.. and starting today you all our my family.. thanks in advance |
Re: Hello! New To Site, My Story
I had tears rolling out of my eyes...after reading your post. Mostly after reading that your mom had passed away when you were 13. I can't imagine my life with out my mom. I can only imagine what you went through...you must have a strong heart. I know we're in this situation and only hoping that it is temporary and soon we will all get our green cards. I really don't know any advice to give you..but i can only pray for you. Take care.. write me if you ever wanna talk.

Wow. My heart goes out to you. I know what it's like losing a parent at that age (I lost my father when I was 14) and it's so confusing and frustrating. Unfortunately, I don't have any helpful information to help you out, but hey, if you wanna talk or vent or anything, I think we'd get along. If you have AIM or MSN, let me know :)

Hi
Sorry for everything you have had do go through. . . my advice to you.. is to go to med school. if you have family that can get a loan for you or whatever you can think of.. just don't let this situation stop you. this will pass, but you will never get this time back. you will never be 23 again.. so do what you have to and pray for the dream act. |
Re: Hello! New To Site, My Story
There are a lot of scholarships available for students that are in the health and engineering fields. Such scholarships do not ask for legal status.

Re: Hello! New To Site, My Story
Thanks all for your support. The one thing that's stopping me from med school is not the finances, but more so the status. Graduate and professional schools, do not allow undocumented students to apply, or atleast all the ones I've run across. The minimum you must have legal residency status. :(
That's why I am dreaming for the "DREAM ACT" |

Thank you for sharing your story in this forum. I was glad when I found this website because it truly is the place where you can just let your feelings out and get help from people that are in a similar situation. But hey, we are going to overcome this! And I admire you for being such a strong person despite your mom's passing. That is another obstacle that you had to go through. And regarding med school, have you tried looking into private medical schools? I know med schools in TX are very hard to get into if you are an out of state student. I'm sure that you can get in somewhere if you truly show your passion for medicine through your app, interview, MCAT, GPA, etc. And like someone else on this thread said, there are always many scholarships available for people going into those fields! I hope everything goes alright! |
Re: Hello! New To Site, My Story
I'm on the same situation, except my passport is mine and correct but expired.
