I didn’t know I would feel so hopeless following Obama’s campaign of hope. Washington politics is broken and it's evident by the imminent failure of this healthcare bill. What is real anymore? Everything else seems so material but the confines of my mind. I see all of the injustices going on in the world- the genocides, the rapes, the hungers, the wars, the food shortages, the natural disasters, the water crisis, even the cosmological battle that is going in our subconcious mind- and I know deep inside I have what it takes to make a difference. Yet I've never felt so hopeless. I know it will all be ok when the dust settles, but in the meantime I have to put up with turning on the TV and watching these dbags (excuse the french) comment for the sake of commenting, talking for the sake of profit, advocating for the sake of lobbying. The problems of the world all seem to have a simple solution as I go about my days- love. Being an “illegal” has become the scarlet letter our society uses to sodomize and marginalize the poorest and neediest individuals in our society, people with broken wings and beaten to death with xenophobic rhetoric. Ghosts. Mimes. Immigrants and foreigners have always been looked as a negative geographical phenomenon in society. They are an excellent source of cheap labor which doesn’t make much noise. Devoid of legal protection, plagued by fear, traumatized by their unique experiences. Someday, our dream of becoming part of this nation will be fulfilled. Religious and business leaders are already calling illegal immigration the new civil rights movement. Except it’s anything but a movement. We are broken. Unorganized. The Church has been the sole organizer in marches and protests- an ironic symbol of our bastardized culture and neglect from society. I may sound very melancholic and yes, the tone of this is very emo. But just thought I'd write my two cents on one of the few places that I feel safe doing so. Even if we are all just wasting our time here waiting, wishing, hoping.

i know the feeling of being hopeless... it is so empty..

the reason we are not oraganized is because we live in fear of being deported. But there are still things we can all do. We can take an hour every day and write some letters, mail them, fax them, call in to let these politicians know that we are here. We need them to do this.

Today I sent out 24 more cards. I have sent over 200 cards and letters in the past couple months, and I can be doing so much more... but there are sooooo many of us and if we all did that every day, I promise you there will be change.

That's great!

To the others who seem to be complaining but not being active at all, you can either work hard or take the easy route and leave the country. If you're unable to get an education because of your circumstances, take some action. If you're able to get an education, I think you should probably work hard and study hard regardless of your status. Since I'm not too politically active, I continue to study and improve relationships with my professors. In the long run, regardless of whether or not the Dream Act passes, I'll be studying and studying.

Hopefully the Dream Act will pass, but that doesn't mean that you should halt everything you do. You can go buy some textbooks and study independently as well. I'm putting school on hold because I can't afford tuition anymore, but I'm still staying in the east coast to study independently and work under my professor. You should not depend too much on one piece of legislation. Sulking won't accomplish anything.

Being active is key; if not for the Dream Act, for yourself at least. Stop sitting your mother's basement and think that once the Dream Act does pass, you'll instantly be a different person.

ohh great idea on the independent study, and here is a great resource provided free of charge by a top school with just about everything you would need to study.

there is another site by MIT with only lectures videos, but cannot find it until I go back to school where it is saved on my computer (it has saved me from incomprehensible lectures by professors in my school, most notably physics).

I've actually used that website from time to time. :P Since I'm taking a year off, I just bought all the textbooks that I would have been using if I were in school and started reading them...

I don't think 'leaving the country' is taking the easy route at all. I believe it takes a lot of guts to start over in another country.
