What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
The money is due at the end of the month and now my college tells me that the scholarship money for whatever reason hasn't kicked in yet and that I will have to pay about $3K in less than 15 days!!
I dont have that much money. This is my first semester in college I was wondering if I could just drop off out this college and go to a community college and apply as a fresh outta high school student. Can there be a problem with it? P.S.- this is my very first semester in this college so I dont necessarily need any transcripts to transfer. |
Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
I am not sure what your college policy is about not paying tuition, but for the colleges I've gone to, the worst they did was to drop a student from the class if they haven't paid it by the due date. In my case, if I know I couldn't pay, I drop my classes right away before they can do it. I advise you to do the same if you're really sure that you won't have the money. I'm sorry to hear about that.....life's really hard sometimes. =(

Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
If you dont pay your tuition you will not be able to transfer your credits to the CC.
Generally, You should be able to claim financial hardship and negotiate down what you owe. The college would rather get part of what you owe them than nothing at all. I would offer half and tell them they accept this or they will not get anything at all... Get it in writing that 1.5k that you pay represents you total debt to the university and that you will be able to transfer your earned credits after paying that amount. This process may take a while so I would stay away from taking the same classes at the CC that you already took at this college. Eventually you will be able to transfer them in. I know you said that this is your first semester in this college and you dont necessarily need any transcripts to transfer but there is no need or reason for you to take the classes over again. Trust me it will work... |
Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
Generally speaking, if you don't pay, they'll drop you from your classes. However, if you go in the Fin Aid office and tell them that you have pending funds in the form of a scholarship, they can always add a note to your record saying that you're trying to pay. Especially if that scholarship is basically all you owe.
This same shizz happened to me. The threatened to drop me from my classes if I didn't pay, but they also didn't credit my account with a scholarship I know I should have had. Try it. What more do you have to lose? |
Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
Thank you guys for all the quick responses. I REALLY do appreciate it.
so here is the thing.. I tried talking to every single person I could at the financial aid office.I even told them that I only had 2K after (personal) loans and stuff and there is no way I can pay the full amount.. but Nobody is ready to budge. So I was wondering if I could transfer to a CC.. the tuition wouldn't be so much and even if I end up taking the same classes again.. I will end up paying half or even less. The question again..as I do not have a S.S., they cannot trace me by SSN.. and since its my first semester.. I dont need a transcript. I will just give the new college my HS transcript. Does anyone know of any potential problem that could arise? |
Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
The financial office personnel may not have the explicit authority to 'wheel and deal' and to wave any of the costs. See if you can talk to someone higher up. If not, don’t sweat it. Once it goes to the schools attorneys for collection they will be willing to deal and pretty much take what you will give them. Do NOT give them more than half! Split the costs with them.
While you wait take classes other than what you have already taken. In fact, take a transfer guide and find out what they are so that you don’t take them by mistake. I was in a similar situation. I went to an expensive private university right out of HS on a athletic, academic and some other scholarships. I happened to get injured and lost my athletic scholarship and somehow my other scholarships seemed to “wither” away. Pretty soon I was looking at a 20k college tuition bill. I transferred to a CC and took classes I haven’t taken at the university (other than a business law class which I took twice because I happened to enjoy it). Eventually the schools attorneys contacted me and I settled for 10k and transferred my credits to the CC. I graduated and went on to get my BS at a state university. |

Thanks. This REALLY helped. Quick question- Since you only paid half the tuition, did they give you all the credits for the classes you took while at the Univ? |
Re: What happens if you dont pay college tuition?
I got all my credits and it did not affect my (financial) credit rating.
