college help...please?
hello. well my plan of going to a university has been shot down because of my mom's refusal to pay. so now ill be attending community college for 2 years then will be transfering.
I have a few questions and will be greatful if you helped :] 1. what do i put as my status in this country because i am also an AB540 student? 2. Do i get in state tuition at a community college or will i have to pay more than $20 a unit? Thank you again :] |
Re: college help...please?
So, I'm assuming you're from California because you said you're an AB540 student.
(http://www.greendot.org/home/what_is_ab540) The AB540 law was passed in 2001 in order to allow undocumented students to pay resident fees in California's public colleges and universities, as long as the student graduates from a California high school with at least three years of residency in the state. AB540 Students must meet the following requirements: High school attendance in California for three or more years. Graduation from a California high school or attainment of the equivalent such as a GED. Register as an entering student at, or current enrollment at, an accredited institution of higher education in California: University of California, California State University and all community colleges. If the person is without a lawful immigration status, the student must complete an affidavit with the public college or university stating that the student has filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status, or will file an application as soon as he or she is eligible to do so. Student information provided to the college or university is confidential and protected by Federal law. If you are eligible, this means that you will only pay In-State Tuition. In the case of community colleges, it means you only have to pay $20 a unit. Now, depending on where you are in your legal status, you may be eligible for a Governor's Fee Waiver but that's something you need to talk about with the specific college. When putting what is your status just put the truth. You cannot put legal immigrant unless you have an Alien registration number so I believe you put non-immigrant but I'm not sure. Oh, and in order to get the resident tuition, you must fill in the AB540 paper. And I believe you have to turn in one every year but I think that varies with the college as well. I hope this helps!! |
Re: college help...please?
thank you so much :]
but where do i get an Ab540 paper? im sorry. im a clueless senior |
Re: college help...please?
You can get this form at the junior college you're planning to attend. If you are the bright student I believe you might be I hope you don't rule out applying to private colleges. I am at a private college where I was not discriminated against because of my undocumented status. Be strong and look around, there's many opportunities you can take advantage of. I have no idea if it's too late, but look into Questbridge. It is the scholarship organization that helped me get into this college. Good luck!

Re: college help...please?
Hey Mishii,
You can also download and print a copy of AB540 from the following website. I say when you go apply to whatever community college you are going to, you take the completed form as well as give it to them. http://www.csus.edu/registrar/pdf/no...ion_waiver.pdf I imagine you don't have a green card or alien number, so you should check the second box that says you are NOT a U.S citizen, etc. Hope this helped and again, good luck! |
Re: college help...please?
HELLO!
I am also an AB540 student. The community college I went to had options such as "are you a citizen" "you have a visa/ type of visa" "work permit" and it had "other" I checked other and simply put undocumented. You tell them you are an AB540 student and you fill out the form. They will probably ask you to bring in a copy of your high school diploma and sealed transcripts, I think for all 4 years, not sure but I know they want it. After that you'll pay regular fees which is $20? $22? per unit. Even if your mom was going to pay, it would have been a waste of money!! Going to community college for the first 2 years is the best idea, and maybe I PRAY that after that the Dream Act has already passed GOOD LUCK !! |
Re: college help...please?

Re: college help...please?
well i go to a private college and its exspensive but i live in florida and as far as i know there isnt anything that helps undocuments kids.. so for the time being i have to pay 1500 per class per semester. i have no choice because all the other school i applied to either rejected me cause of my status or put me on a waiting list. but i like the school im at cause they looked over my minor disadvantage and let me do payment plans and let me take one class a semester and still get my degree afterwards.
