College Application: Classified as an International Student?
 

I just had some questions concerning the College application process.

I' have been filling out the Common Application for several schools and have completed them. When you reach he "Demographics" section of the application questions about your status are asked. I answered them truthfully stating that I was not a U.S. citizen and that "I do not hold a U.S. non-immigrant Visa." All these selections appear from the drop down menu.

However, it seems that I am being classified as an International Student. Some schools who's application are not on the Common App require me to send additional forms such as financial forms stating that I will be able to pay for the full tuition and English Proficiency test scores.

Should I contact the admissions officer in my area and e-mail them directly my questions about the application process, or should I just send the application, see if I get accepted and then deal with the financial issues afterward? Anything would help. Thanks.

I live in Connecticut, which I know after doing some research on the topic is not one of the 9 or so states that offer in state financial aid to undocumented students. This is mostly the reason why I am applying to private schools. I figure I have more of a shot with a private school than a public one.

Ahh! I live in Connecticut too!! Yeah, here in CT we are treated as international students. which sucks. But umm, yeah I think you should email them and let them know of your status. That way you dont have to take the TOEFL and all these things they usually ask an International student to submit. By the way, which colleges are you applying to?

Thanks. I guess I going to e-mail them and see what they say. But as far as schools I'm applying to, they are:

-Fordham (NY)
-NYU
-Quinnipiac University
-Northeastern
-Suffolk
-Salve Regina
-Penn State (I don't know if I am anymore since the school doesn't have a common app and requires me to send those forms)
-USC (far reach school)

so this is what i did exactly! but guess what, thei international admission officer told me that she would have to report me and have me banned on applying to University of pittsburgh! hah. nice.

Before classifying as an International Student, You might want to ask a counselor on how you can qualify as a resident of that state. Like I did for the state of Nevada, I told them about my status, and how I could qualify for in-state. Some might take a Passport (valid) and something else to prove that you have been living in the state such as, tax returns, selective service card etc.

so after showing those things.. did you end up getting in-state tuition?
