WASHINGTON — The Democratic-controlled House has passed historic health care legislation to provide medical coverage to millions more Americans.

Most Americans would be required to carry insurance and large employers would be obliged to cover their employees.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Triumphant Democrats steered landmark health care legislation to the brink of passage in the House late Saturday night, spurred by a summons from President Barack Obama to "answer the call of history" and expand coverage to millions who lack it.

After months of struggle, Speaker Nancy Pelosi projected confidence and likened the bill to the creation of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the runup to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.

lets hope the senate passes it as well :)

But isnt the senate passing their own bill and if that happens then they have to compromise and pass it again in both the house and the senate before Obama signs it ?

Yes, If the Senate passes it which it will for sure, it is a done deal...They will just have to reconcile the two bills under a joint committee and the bill will then be finalized. It will then be sent to President Obama's desk for final signature!

This is a good news. I hope CIR or DREAM Act will also be passed by both House and Senate then signed by President Obama for enactment in the near future!
Then I will be commenting under "House Passes CIR Bill" and crying out of joy at the same time.

This isnt somethign to be too happy about. The fact that it would pass in the house was a given. Where it might end up stalling is in the Senate.

The junior Senator from Idaho who is a Democrat has said candidly that he shall vote against the bill. Joe liebermann has spoken against it and said he will support republicans in filibustering it.

Thats 2 people out of the 60 needed. Basically, the bill will end up at the mercy of republicans who will desire to filibuster it. I bet there is atleast one republican looney enough to do it.

Health care seemed like something difficult to pass. Maybe immigration will happen after all.

Both senators from Idaho are republicans.

Good news. It will pass in Senate also with 60 or more votes.

So will we have a CIR bill introduced before the end of the year?
