Exciting News!!
Hello everyone!
I wasn't sure whether I should post this under the News section or not so I'm posting here. This past weekend I went on a very exciting trip to attend a science conference with my fellow classmates. During the conference I had the opportunity to attend a meeting with Juan Sepulveda who's the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans (I know it's a long title). He works in the department of education so he works directly with Obama and the Secretary of Education Mr. Duncan. He told me that the reason why DREAM Act was so much on the down low was because they think it is best for there not to be much more talk about it (mainly because they don't want opposing groups to start lobbying against it) but he guaranteed it WILL pass. Health reform remains #1 priority right now. DREAM will NOT pass as a stand-alone bill. It will pass together with another Immigration Legislation they are strategizing now. This is because if DREAM passes by itself, they think it will be hard to pass another immigration legislation after that. So don't worry, they don't talk about dream because they don't want any negativity about it on the media not because they forgot about it. I heard all this straight from a White House insider so I was very excited to share this news, although it is nothing we already didn't know. After talking to him for a while I agreed on working with him as he is trying to get community involvement in promoting higher education, I am very excited because I might get to fly out to Washington and meet Obama in the White House and hopefully talk about DREAM with him, but I'll keep you guys posted on that! :) |

Re: Exciting News!!
Oh and I forgot to say Immigration would be next after Health reform is passed. As we can see, Health reform is moving pretty fast.
And no problem, if you guys have any particular questions you guys want me to ask him let me know, it doesn't have to be about DREAM in particular but also about education in general. |

Re: Exciting News!!
WOW! This is very exciting news!
I was also thinking that since one of my professors (who I did research with) is going to receive a presidential award from Obama, I could maybe tell him about the DREAM ACT so he could remind the president, but I was too chicken when I went to go see the professor for my letter of recommendation. Anyways I am glad you went to this conference. Keep up the good work! |
Re: Exciting News!!
mmmm...I don't know; we are talking about politicians here. They say one thing and do another.
Just look at Obama, can't pass the health care bill he wanted so bad. Gave one deadline, and then another, and another; as if he didn't have the guts to run the country. (who knows, maybe he doesn't have the guts to run the country, but who am I to question this; I'm just an illegal immigrant with a kick ass accent) The bill passed only when the people in the House of Representatives, felt like they wanted to have a bill. And now we have to wait (again, like some many other times) for the Senate to do something. My advice: don't get too excited. |

I agree with Juan

Pessimism? Me? I just don't want people to build up their hopes really high to avoid a down fall. Just like with Obama, lots of people expected a lot from him...and look at what he has done. I'm not saying he hasn't done anything; all I'm expressing is he seems to be more of a "talker" than a "doer". I really want to see the DREAM Act enacted, but I'm way too experienced to blindly believe "politicians will do something once the time is right" I heard that story so many times before, it means nothing. The day the DREAM Act passes the House or the Senate, I may consider start getting optimistic about it; but not before. And please, stop it with the insults. Show some maturity. |
