Working in the US
Ok, I've searched around for hours and haven't come across anything definitive yet. So my question is:
how exactly does an undocumented immigrant work in the united states? 1. I know some people work with a fake ssn. Would one use that ssn on the I-9 (employment eligibility) form? And on that form, in section 1, which type of residency or citizenship does one claim to have? Here's a link to the form: www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf. What about taxes, how does one report taxes when working under a fake name and ssn? 2. Can one use an I-TIN (Individual Taxpayer's ID Number) to work? I know its not acceptable by law, but do people still do it and get away with it? If anyone can please give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it! |
Re: Working in the US
@1. DO NOT fill such a form. Claiming US citizenship is a crime and will get you deported and banned from the US for a really long time.
@2. I am sure people do it out there but we do not encourage that activity in our community. I do not think it's worth the risk. |
Re: Working in the US
Ok thanks, my moral compass would probably stop me from stealing an ssn anyways, but my question remains unanswered: How does an undocumented immigrant work? How are we supposed to make a living?

Re: Working in the US
I do not work because most places ask for papers. I suppose that those who choose to do so get fake ones. Those who play it safe somehow get jobs that get paid under the table, such as working in a small restaurant or something.

Small odd jobs, get in contact with your local latino groups. We all got to stick together.
