Only if you have SSN. Get your WA license first, then use it along with your SS card, you will be able to get a NC license.

I was reading up at dmv.com and dmv.org and they say you need a ssn for WA too.. What's up with that?

by "SS card" I meant the actual Social Security Card with your signature on it. Many people might not have it, others that do tend to be the ones who overstayed their visa but once entered legally (like back in the 90's).

Regarding dmv.com and dmv.org, these are not official government sites. They can give over-generalized and inaccurate information. Always check with each state's OFFICIAL dmv site.

I have a SSN number, but it has that has the whole "not authorized for work without work permit" written on it, would I be able to get a license?

I honestly have no idea, but from what I've read from the govt sites is that "If you are not a U.S. citizen, but in the United States legally and are not authorized to work, you are not eligible for an SSN." But if you're here legally in someway but not able to work then yeah maybe you can. Just google it

Just to make sure. You HAVE To have a WA DL along with the SSN right? You cannot get it only with the SSN?

And yeah, my SSN also has the "able to work only with INS authorization" thingy. I don't think it's going to be a big deal though.

I don't think the sign of "not authorized for work without work permit" matters so long as it's an authentic social security card. People at DMV use it to check your identity, not your work status.

A US government-issued ID always comes handy at a federal agency. Sure you could twist around with the DMV's requirement list and see what other proof serves the purpose. I just took a look at the NC DMV requirements, pretty lax as I say, even a school registration record & diploma would do. Just make sure it has your DOB on it.

Congratulations, you now have an easier task than my cousin who got his MA license thru WA DL + SSC combo.
