EPS: Mr. President, would you try to approve the Dream Act in Congress after the election and before next year?

POTUS: You know, I'm a big supporter of the Dream Act. I've spoken about it many times. I used to be a sponsor of the bill when I was in the Senate. What I wanna do is I wanna consult with immigrant rights groups and with the Congressional Hispanic Caucuses to make a strategic decision. It may be that we can pass the Dream Act without comprehensive immigration reform. The only thing I'm concerned about is if we just take that small piece, then maybe it becomes harder for us to get the whole thing and so I would love to see the Dream Act passed right away, but I think it's very important for us to have a discussion within the community. If we think realistically that's the only thing that we could get done, then we may make that judgment, but I'm still holding out right now to see if we can get the Dream Act passed and AgJobs passed as part of a broader package so that we allow the 10 to 12 million people who are still living in the shadows to come out and not live in fear. Look, obviously, the Dream Act would be better than nothing and that's something that I think we're gonna have to judge. But I don't wanna make that decision by myself. I wanna be in a discussion with the community and we're not gonna know until after this election. So, so much depends on what do things look like after the election.

I thought most people have come to the conclusion that CIR is not realistic anytime soon? There is nothing left to discuss IMO.

I have already mentioned it before, pass the DA first, lets the people that are covered come out and further support something more comprehensive in numbers. Right now the beneficiaries of both bills are kept mostly underground because there is a huge potential for repercussions if they speak out.

I don't know why but I have a feeling if Democratss by some chance win the elections next week or at least keep some decent amount of their seats they'll be like, "hey let's push for CIR and forget about dream act as standalone", leading to another huge debate and a deadlock congress that doesn't work with each other resulting in nothing getting done because of no Supermajority! I hope I'm being stupid and wrong but I would rather have a them realize they can't pass CIR for a while and should start focusing on some more tame legislation like DREAM after the elections if they lose. I know it sounds stupid but really, politicians seem to only get things done when their backs are against the wall. Obama had a chance to be the Democrat's Reagan, hopefully he dosen't become another Jimmy Carter. I know it's not all his fault, the whole system in F**K'D. If only republicans realized that a lot of immigrants including Latinos support there conservative Values but usually don't vote for them because of immigration.

Well get on with that judgement already because its obvious CIR aint gonna go through a minority Republican congress let along one that will be 50% controlled by them.

Re: Transcript of President Barack Obama with Univision

Well, we have to realize that there are going to be 8-10 million people not covered by the DA, those 8-10 million would feel the need to voice their anger at not having something that they and many people, in my opinion, falsely believe will give a greater possibility of their reform passing, unfortunately this government and many people take the business approach to things which has a tendency of making decision on potential short term benefits and results, and I feel long term the DA passing as a stand alone bill would have the fastest and best benefit for everyone that is in this situation.

As for voting for independents, well, they are usually independents because they used to be dems or reps and realized that someone else had a better chance so they immediately switched to independent and try to tell the people that deep down in their hearts they were always independent, while in the previous life they used to be very much to the right or left.

Who was it that felt in the beginning that the DA needed to be postponed and united with the CIR because they felt that passing the DA might decrease the possibilities of passing the more comprehensive immigration reform? This is not a new theory, it has been out there for a while now, unfortunately.

Let's hope the damage is not as bad after mid terms if they can pass the Dream Act in November the new Congress could actually get CIR done.

Listening to his response, he sounds removed from the Dream Act and has it very low on his priority list. I like the language he used. He is genuine about used to being a sponsor, which tells me that he isn't genuine about passing the Dream Act. He would have said "I was the sponsor" or "I sponsored the bill" if he felt somewhat connected to the DA.
CIR is NOT going to pass. Not with Democrats as majority nor minority. CIR is NOT going to pass. To me, based on the way Obama phrased it, it sounds like the DA will not pass this year or anytime in the near future.
So make plans in your life accordingly.
