Self employment without documents

Hello everyone,

I have a question. Does anyone know what it means to be self employed? Can one work for him self? I do know that you are required to pay taxes. I am an engineer and work for a semi-small company. I did an internship there as an undergraduate. Everyone was very helpful and I enjoy my job a lot. I am about to graduate and I have been offered a job there. Human resources has been receiving IRS letters saying my SS does not match. Obviously they know about my situation and they do not want to let me go ( I made my self indispensable). The human resources when as far as telling me to find someone to marry. After brainstorming she came up with the idea of " Why don't we hire you as a subcontractor? She told me I would have to play taxes? Does anyone know that this means in terms of our situation? She mentioned a 1099 form.

Thank you for any replies in advance.

From what I know, people who file 1099s can do so with their tax id numbers, you would just have to pay like 15% back of the taxes your employer did not claim. There have been some posts/threads about independent contractors here in DAP, go through them and you might find the answer.

If they are willing to hire you as a sub-contractor you are set. If you have questions send me a private message. I own a business and I hired subcontractors.

Yes, you can work as a subcontractor. You'll technically be self-employed and won't be an employee of the company. They can pay you with a check that they cut as if they were going to cut a check for a repair man that comes in. You get your check, cash it or deposit it into your bank account.

At the beginning of the next year they'll give you a 1099 form (instead of a W2 that regular workers get) with all of the money they paid you. Pay your taxes with that form and with your individual taxpayer ID number. If you don't have one, I recommend finding an immigrant-friendly tax preparation place and ask them for help.

Thank the lucky stars that you found a company that is willing to help you out, knowing your situation.

Thank you guys for your responses they have been of great help. If I last there, I hope I can make some money to help others in our situation. We should get organized and make some type of self run company. That would be great.

Yes, you can work as an "independent contractor." Basically, you will work at home/office and they will pay you. You can also expand that "independency" to something else. You make your own business and pay taxes as everyone else.

Make sure you put money aside for your taxes so that you can pay next year. Otherwise you will be sorry.
