Texas Legislature Amends Driver’s License Statute
On September 28, 2011, a new Texas law will go into effect which substantially changes the rules governing issuance of a driver's license to foreign nationals in Texas. The rules state that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) may not issue a driver's license that is in a different format from, or that contains any information not normally included on, a driver's license. Specifically, a foreign national's driver's license will return to being identical in format to those issued to U.S. citizens (i.e., horizontal versus landscape, and without the designation of "temporary visitor"). Further, the new rules eliminate the requirement that the individual's immigration documents be valid for one full year with at least six months of status remaining. As such, there will no longer be two different expiration dates as in the past (i.e., a status expiration date and a license expiration date). Anyone has any input on this issue? i am guessing u still need to show your immigration status to apply for a TX DL am i right? |
