Can Dreamers write books?
This isnt a thread about dreamers getting together to write our stories into a book, i's about dreamers who seriously want to write for a living.
It's my dream to be an author and since this isn't a typical job where I would need the right wokring permits (an author isn't an employee of a publishing house, they are more of an independent contractor), can someone without status become an author? Anyone know? thanks. |
Re: Can Dreamers write books?
Depends on what you are asking? If you are asking if you can write a book and get a contract with a good front advancement then probably not. Unless you are a really unique book, the publishers won't take a risk.
Now if you have a little of imagination and can market your product. You could write your book and sell it on Amazon. They have a great author program. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/seller-acco...opic=200260520) also you can work with small publishers. While you sell your book, you can work as a ghost writer or do some editorial work on the internet. If you have a real writing ability you can actually make a living as freelance writer and set it up as a business. If you need more help on how you would set that up let me know. |

I dont want to self publish. Just wanted to know if its possible to do it through the big publishing houses. Like, do they even need to be aware of my status?

Re: Can Dreamers write books?
I really doubt a publisher will give you a first shot if you have no other books, articles or anything else. So unless you self publish, I don't see how they will take a look at your draft. But you never know, you can always try sending them your material.

I think they'll 1099 you, and for that all you need is am ITIN

Re: Can Dreamers write books?
Whoa. Getting a book published by one of the big publishing houses that actually pay a lot of money, is an incredibly difficult thing to achieve. There are thousands of authors every year, just like there are thousands of actors, who are broke, unemployed, and have been trying to get stuff published for years. You can try to be an author but hoping to get published on a national level, is similar to a physics student thinking of one day winning the Nobel prize.
However, the answer is yes. If you do somehow manage to find a publisher, you will be paid as an outside contractor and your ITIN would suffice for the stuff on their end. You can even sell articles as an outside contractor. |
Re: Can Dreamers write books?
Well thanks for the responses guys--though I could do without with you all killing my dreams! Lots of people get published. And if they can, then why can't I?
And you're right, labamba a publisher will never look at unsolicited materials. (I plan to find an agent first.) |
Re: Can Dreamers write books?
You definitely can, though you might have more success with a foreign publisher.
I met a man trying to sell his book about his experiences in the United States a few weeks back at a book store in Puebla. His book was in Spanish and he was doing a signing. So I figure you could write it, try to get a US publisher to buy into it, then shop around. |
