Continuing Education

Hi,

Hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to know if anyone knows or ever heard of any Dreamers who did a PhD. Particularly in the science/engineering field. I want to know - Are dreamers allowed to get any funds? Can we get the teaching assistantship or research scholarships? I think you have to be a citizen right? If so, how can a dreamer get funding for PhD if not through schools?

Also, what about an MBA? An MBA is really a Master's so that is possible I think if you can pay your own way somehow or get a loan?

Any information is much appreciated. Thanks.

M.S. ECE student here. Got it by paying full out of state tuition. Graduating next month and looking forward to PhD. I've contacted various schools' admissions dept and some of them reply with a brief "fellowships are merit based", or, like Stanford, they reply saying "our school policies state that for students to register they must obtain and maintain appropriate status." But it is well known that Stanford has admitted and funded DREAMers (at least at the undergrad level).

I'm guessing this ambiguous reply stems from simply not knowing. Although every time I contact staff I directly address the problems I am likely to face as a student if I want to be funded (for example, stipend issues), none take the time to concisely reply to my questions.

I live over 1,000 miles away from all my dream schools and lack the vital connections :|. In the Stanford case, I've emailed numerous times (over a period of 3 months) the dean of student and diversity affairs along with the dean of "El Centro Chicano" and have been ignored. It's not easy :|

I have been working to start a couple organizations and have talked to enough people around my school to learn that there are more than a dozen students who are undocumented completing their doctoral thesis. It is certainly possible.

^ Though completing doctoral thesis is different from being funded. Are these students being funded?

I almost have my Masters in Sciences; and my advisor and I could not figure out a way to get the money to me. This is at a state school, which also makes it more difficult. Only way was through stipend which I couldn't get without work authorization.

I shall ask, but this is through a private institution and thus funding tends to have fewer issues than with state schools particularly when considering the status of the students involved.

i'm 6 months from getting an MSc. Since I can't be 'hired' by the school I can't be insured, since I can't be insured, I can't work in the labs and am thus relegated to do a Mickey Mouse thesis (this may be similar policy in other schools). I'm moving to Canada and starting over.

they are on fellowships (tuition scholarships).

@Ali, As far as insurance, if you have private or some insurance they will probably take it, if not, they work with Aetna and it will cost just under 1k per year for the insurance.

thanks for the info. Yea, I also contacted my school which is a private university. I think it would be easier to go for MBA over PhD.

Wow at least my school didn't have that problem. That's crazy that being insured requires hiring.
