Consider the most advanced city in your home country...

I see a lot of people worrying about returning to their home country. But just remember that you should focus a lot on WHERE in your country you would want to live. If you take HDI as what determines a first world country, Mexico City is first world. India have a couple of States, Kerala and Chandigarh, which have a high HDI as well. Just something you guys should think about.

Screw that, I am not going to south america, I vaguely recall ever even being there. I am going back to Europe, I think I still have all my residency papers in order. If not.. third world country it is then :(

Interesting thing to consider indeed. Personally, I wouldn't mind living in the city I'm from, Nairobi, one of the developing cities in Africa. However, I don't think I could fully have everything I want over there that I see in America. The exchange rate is the biggest killer. The story completely changes once you've made enough money and can afford to invest over there. Point is I think I would need a back up before being able to settle in Nairobi. I would be more hopeful in living in cities in South Africa, much more advanced.

Nairobi sounds like the better option to me if the choices are either Kenya or South Africa, simply because living in South Africa would be like living in the US to some extent due to the history of Apartheid there. Maybe it's just me, but after dealing with all the BS over here as a minority, I'd definitely NOT want to live in another county that has a similar history of racism and discrimination.

Nairobi is killer dude, the "green city in the sun" hahahha. I hear good things about it, besides the kibera slums it seems like an epic place. And South Africa is cool too, but it just depends where you live in the country, if you can make it in there and get a ton of money after months of work, I'd head for a gated community, because crime there seems outrageous. and out of control.

Being that I live 2 hours outside of Mexico City, I can say parts of Mexico city do look first world. Then, there is a massive ring of slums also attached to it. You can go from a part with beautiful buildings and houses to a part looking like a refuge camp in a matter of 10 minutes.

Here in Puebla, we have about the same murder rate as Wisconsin.

I must hand it to you. Your knowledge is very deep. Glad to see you know about the Kibera slums. Yes you are absolutely right. Actually epic is an understatement. Super epic is the correct word to describe Nairobi. The life is just incredibly easy for office type workers. Offices close at 5 pm. Saturdays are half day and don't dare talk about work on Sundays. Bright blue skies, breezy, 75-85 degree weather 365 days a year. We never owned a fan in our home let alone AC. Yes, the only issues are the security or lack off as you mentioned and the economy. You can deal with the security if you live accordingly and I am getting news from friends that the economy is improving day by day. Nairobi reminds me of cities like Chicago to be honest...hope it reaches to that level one day!

Yes, most of Africa is just a beautiful continent and it's been growing so nicely over the past decade, and I hear the same, I hear Nairobi has just been the past decade just growing profusely, and now that Kenya even has oil reserves, I'm sure some of that oil wealth is going to trickle into Nairobi, plus a bunch of American corporations have African HQs there, so the transition could be even easier then expected if you do go back. I guess the only thing that one needs to worry about in Keyna is the whole political drama right? With Kibaki and Odinga I believe? It sucks that ethnic factionalism still plays a role in so many countries around the world.
