electrical engineering or computer engineering

I'm transferring to a 4 year university soon. I was thinking about computer science. I took a few programming courses, but to be honest, I kinda hate programming. I don't want to just sit in front of a computer all day and type, I'm more of a hands on guy. I'm deciding if I should go with electrical engineering or computer engineering. There are a lot of electrical engineer students, don't know if the market is saturated with EE or not. I don't know which one would be more valuable in the future. Any advice from dreamers who are in this field would be helpful.

How far are you right now in school? Credits, etc.

So far all the choices of fields you are choosing to embark on in my opinion are about the same in terms of what you will earn. At the end of the day, I would say choose the field you think you will enjoy the most.

By the way, depending what you get into with computer engineering, you will still need to know the software side if you want to get far.

Do electrical if you do not like programming so much. Honestly even doing electrical will require plenty of knowledge of computer stuff.

Even I, a mechanical engineer program quite a lot.

If you do not like programming do civil. Civils hate electricity and computers hehe.

I love physics in general so, I am pretty good in both. I can say that I had only like 6 credits from a B.S in physics, and I know a lot about electronics. More than some undergrad E.E students.

Have you read about the technological singularity??

Read on that. Maybe it will help you decide.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Singularit.../dp/0670033847

If I could go back in time. I would do have done a double major in E.E and CS.

I plan to study something along the lines of Nanotechnology while in Grad school.

Nanotechnology is the hot topic in mechanics and applied physics, electrical engineering and material science.

I am excited for the future,

our lives as we know them will change drastically in the upcoming years. In a decade you will see. You will be like that crazy dude was right hehe.

computer engineering = electrical engineering + computer science

Programming is a necessity in EE right now do civil I don't think they program. I was going to say chemical but they're starting to program too.

Has anybody done manufacturing engineering?

No, but I do it at work a lot. Manufacturing Engineering is not my favorite of things to do. You are in charged of designing and optimizing processes, planning, work instructions, safety etc.. etc...

I personally hate doing planning and scheduling at work. I hate the NPI, MRP and all that bullshit six sigma crap. Get me some power, steel, a huge CNC, some welders and let me make something.

I feel as though manufacturing engineer degree is not really necessary to be a "manufacturing engineer". I am a mechanical engineer and I can do basically all that a "manufacturing engineer" does. I hate it, but sometimes I do it at my job. I have done some inventory control, scheduling, safety stuff, plan layouts, and work cell set ups. In very informal ways, but I know my stuff. Since I work at a manufacturing plant, I bought all the books that go along with undergraduate education for industrial engineering (most important classes) as I call them. and used them as reference. It is not very hard and everything is basically common sense.

Like I said, as a mechanical engineer I can do all that a manufacturing engineer can do.

The reverse is not true...

Industrial engineers do not even know how to use a screwdriver haha << TRUE STORY.

If you are interested in manufacturing, do mechanical instead and get involved in manufacturing. If you do not like it, then heck, you can do other things. Mechanical engineering is so Broad, you have no idea of the possibilities.

YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!! Mechanical is so much more rewarding and FUN!

People will think you are smart :P Even if you arent, like me, I am not smart and people think I am hehe.

SEND ME A PM IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!!! I can get you some info!!! I have a lot of hmm technical stuff on what manufacturing engineers do and obviously mechanical engineering also.

After some research, I think I'm sold on mechanical engineering. I love hands on projects. In high school, I took a lot of wood making classes and made some interesting stuffs.

So since you are in the industry, do you always see job opening for mechanical engineer?

Phss, Yes,... Where I work we need like 2 more, cannot seem to find them though.

There are always jobs for mechanical since we can do all sorts of things.

Make sure you sign up to an ABET accredited program though. In the future you will want to apply to good companies or even abroad.

You want to be able to make your education compatible with the Australian and UK job markets. ABET is recognized world wide for the most part.

Just checked, my school is on the list. Btw, how much do you make right now?
