Our experience applying for SSN as a minor

Know what to expect before heading to the SSA office and be prepared.

I went to the Social Security office today (10/17) to get my brother's social. He is 16, he didn't have a social before or has worked. His ead went into production on 10/8, he got it on 10/15.

When we first gave the application to the person, he seems surprised that a 16 year old could get a work permit. He double checked and made sure he could submit it. I had printed out this and showed it to him and that seemed to help. (He got a copy for his own keeping.) I used my brother's birth certificate given that his passport is expired. (ID's need to be valid)

The process was a bit long, a bit nerve wracking but it all worked out in the end and we were told he should receive his ssn in 2 weeks.

When applying as a minor both parents socials need to be provided but neither one of my parents have socials. That wasn't an issue. However, the ID of an adult family member needs to be provided. Our complication is that NONE of us have valid IDs. They all expired within the last three weeks and it takes four months to get the new one for our country of origin. I don't know what he did but he made it work out after I explained our situation.

The were only two questions he asked,
"Date you came into the country""Mother's maiden name"

The person was very nice and very patient. And it was the very first time he came across a daca applicant and a minor with a work permit.

Point is,
Be prepared with all your documents. It's helpful to bring the print out in case the person has no idea what DACA is. If a minor, make sure you bring an adult family member with a valid ID. You can also fill out and print the application at home to save time and make sure it's legible.

Thank you for your info, my 17 year old brother has his application for DACA in Process. Hopefully I'll have my valid ID by the time my brother gets approved for his EAD. I am 19, and his older sister. Will it be okay if I am present with my brother?

You can totally be there with him. My brother didn't even open his mouth, at all... I did everything. Our dad was hanging out in the background, we tried to use his ID but it was expired (dad is undocumented btw)... from what I understood they just need to verify the minor and the parents social history, like make sure you haven't had one before.

The person was just like "and you are his what....?" and asked for my age... I don't know if age matters tho. Legal ages vary, 18, 21, 25... so I don't know exactly what age you have to be >.<

Okay, that sounds good then. Both of Our parents live in Mexico. We currently live with our aunt and she is undocumented as well. So I wanted to make sure we won't have any issues. I'm going to print out that sheet you posted to take with us. I barely got my biometrics appointment and I will be sending my brothers DACA application next week. So that's why I want to make sure if I get approved first to be able to go with him. Thank so much! Worst case scenario, my Sister-in-law is a USC would she be able to go with him you think?

Just go by yourself I'm 17 I put unknown for parents social, I had my birth certificate, ead, passport. He asked like 3 questions, if I ever had a social, if I had been in the us before, and if I ever received government assistance, I was like.. um I don't think you can get government assistance without a social, I'm js. He grinned, lol, took 3more minutes, and gave my my receipt which states I should receive my card in 2 weeks or less. I guess it all depends on what employee you get, also act like you know exactly what you are entitled to receive. When people see you are not confident, they tend to give you a hard time. I'm like a mix of demanding, confident, nice, person lol, ( working at a restaurant as a waiter, trainer, gets you this attitude lol)
