Got job interview
 

Hi guys a got a job interview with second tier Cpa firm. I have a couple of questions:

- Do you guys think I should tell the truth why I did not get a job after graduating from school back in 2010 (no papers)? (I started master on 2012)

- Also this is my second semester and my gpa is not the greatest, I did not include it on my resume, but now they have asked me to fill an application (asks for GPA) and bring it to the interview. Truth is my first semester i was working 45 hours a week combined in different jobs :( and going to grad school full-time :) .... 2nd semester i did wayyyy better and my gpa average at the moment....SO how should i defend myself from the GPA question?
*Truth is I did improve after reducing my hours, so should I stick with that?

Don't tell them your past experience. That is a no-no. The GPA is what it is.

You are not required at any point to reveal the circumstances of your legal status, so don't worry about revealing something you do not want to reveal. You are not obligated to, and actually, they should not be asking you what kind of status you have. All they need to know is that you are legally authorized to work. Just know that going in. That being said...

As far as your GPA, explaining what you did to improve your GPA is a great answer, I see nothing wrong with it. As far as why you had a gap between graduating you could choose to disclose about DACA, or you could choose to focus on stating what you were focusing on at the time, any efforts, temp jobs, family issues, or looking for the right job might be sufficient.

Disclosing the DACA issue is tricky and hopefully some forum members that have had job interviews recently can shed some light into what they think is best to do or say about it (I'd like to know too).

I think your asking for advice on how to deflect from DACA for that one year gap. Well, What did you do during that one year?

Did you prepare for the gmat? You knew you wanted to go to a Master program, so maybe you decided to keep the job you had while you prepared to apply for school.

I graduated in 2007 and I've had a couple of internships here and there. What I say is the economy went down, so I was only able to get a job as a receptionist at an office at that time. That job helped me decide to go back to school, because I wanted to exercise what I have actually studied and gain new skills.

Something, that keeps it general & answers their question in a satisfying way that has a great amount of honesty. I never advice flat out lying or flat out talking about your status.

Honestly speaking, I would not lead the conversation that reveals my 2 year work permit because I don't want them to think that I'm leaving after 2 years and the fact that I would even have to explain about being able to renew my work permit every 2 years is just not worth the conversation.

Execpt when hr decides to look what c33 is which is on the ead card. So be ready to explain that in the future but try hard not to bring it up

But, that happens after you get hired. At least from my experience. You don't show paperwork until they hire you. The only way I think they would ask before is if you have to travel.

They're not suppose to discriminate you whatever circumstance you are on. Labor law states that if you're authorized to work, they shouldn't pick you out. All they have to know if that you have authorization to work for any employer in the US, nothing more.

Some jobs will required you to have an US person status and some even required an US citizenship status, so look carefully when you are searching for jobs.
