My experience at the Maryland DMV!

Hello!!

I hope everyone is having a good day! Here in Maryland we are getting some snow.

I wanted to share with everyone else my experience with the DMV. I was blessed enough to live in the state of Maryland where undocumented people were able to obtain a license. I have had one since I was 17, I am now 24. A couple of years ago the Maryland DMV stopped giving licenses to undocumented residents of Maryland. Not only that we were only able to renew them until 2015 and they were not allowed to be used for Federal purposes ( flying, entering a federal building).

I went to the DMV a couple days ago and I was able to take the restrictions for my drivers license and it was renewed until 2020. I only showed my SS card and my old license. I will now be able to show my license with no one asking me why does it say not for federal purposes??:?

I hope my experience can enlighten a couple of Maryland residents.
:p
Have a great day!!

AleDreamer, so your license is now unrestricted or is it still restricted? Was is restricted in the first place? I'm asking because I have had a DL for a while and as far as I know, without restrictions, so I've been wondering how it will go when I renew it this year.

let me know if you can, please. Also, did you ask for the 7 year renewal or did they make you choose between the 5 or 7 year renewal?

As far as I understand it, MD is compliant of the Real ID act. Basically, there are IDs that MD issue that can be used for it (regular), and some that don't (temporary that expire when the EAD expires). That's why I asked my question. People that were issued a license before 2009 never had to prove legal status so when they have to renew, I have no idea what they were going to get issued now.

My license no longer has any restrictions. When there was the law change in Maryland that you had to prove legal status I was not 21 yet. I had to get a new DL once I turned 21 and that one came restricted. If you are not able to prove legal status the DL would only be renewable until June 2015. If you have been approved to DACA just show your SS and they will update your information and renew it for what I believe will be 7 years. I did not ask for 7 year renewal I think it is the new policy.

If your DL was issued after June 2009 and you have no poof of legal status then your DL has a restriction.
It says on the back of the DL and Top part of the front "NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES"

This includes boarding a plane or entering a federal building.

If you have DACA there should be no problem.

Interesting, thanks for the info AleDreamer, now I have a clearer picture of what the MVA is issuing. The information that the MVA gives in their website is confusing.

It's actually MVA not DMV

I know that but I thought it would be more helpful to refer to it as DMV since Ive seen thats how people have referred to it in other states!
