animator career?
what do you think about a career in cg, visual effect or animation? I have always liked making animation videos since i was a kid. Is it hard to get a job in that field?
I have been having difficulty finding a right major since last year.. I was gonna major in Computer science since I know several coding languages but I really hate it and it is extremely boring and I don't want to sit in front of comp looking at codes for rest of my life...... It gives me headache. :( |
Re: animator career?
I would think that the competition might be really crazy for a career like this. And ultimately it might be who you know rather than how good you are?
Is there a school that you had in mind for this? Why not try to go in and speak to a counselor or a professor or some students? Somebody that you can give you career specific insight. And who knows, maybe you won't end up liking it either. But don't worry so much about finding a major. There are people that are way older and going back to school because they changed their minds! |
Re: animator career?
Get that shit out of your head man
STEM or school is not for you dead serious about this. You're going into a competitive field with animation which is arts btw and you're going to do an opportunity cost where you decide what is right for you. Study something the word needs. Even accounting and some business degrees are usefull. If you're an accountant and can't find jobs well do the accounting for small business or families. What are you going to with a liberal arts degree or animation? And if you're asking if its hard to get a job with in that are you really need to research it more Don't waste your time and money on not doing what you studied |

Here's a link I found just by googling. Lots of friends of mine are majoring in MIS it's related to technology...http://www.ut.edu/whymis/ Think of other things that might interest you. :) Good luck! Besides it's okay like sid said there's people that are older that are going back to school and changing careers! Think about your strengths and remember that you have to be able to make a living. If you feel that animation could make you happy then do tons of research on it. I don't know much about that field but I do know that if you want to make it big California's the place to be. |
Re: animator career?
The animation filed is extremely competitive, hell I want to work in the video game industry and I know thats hard. I know allot of people are gonna be like choose a career with more career opportunisties but you gotta do what makes you happy. I'm begging you not to be like one of my friends whos teacher told the class "if they have dreams of working for pixtar just forget it". His dreams was crushed and now he doesn't want to do animation anymore and he is close to getting his degree. One thing I'll tell you is if you wanna chase after your dream have realistic expectations.

Think of animation as a hobby instead of a field to work in. Go into something more useful while learning about animation through books and whatnot. Filming has been a passion for me but I realized, its a really competitive field and barely 2/10 of my friends who went into this have jobs related to their field, the rest don't. |
