Hello, i'm new here... and have some questions
 

hello everyone, just found this website as i am constantly trying ot find out info about the DREAM ACT. I like many of you am hoping so much for this bill to pass. I was brought here from Costa Rica when I was 2 in 1986. I am now 23 almost done with college and have little options. I have been married for 4 years but cannot change my status because i was brought into the country illegally. Luckily, i was changed to in state for being married and got a private schoalrship but i know how hard it is to pay for school as i paid out of state for 2 years. i had a big scholarship for those 2 years and paid about $1000 out of pocket a semester, but it was so hard. just here looking to make some friends and keep informed about all the thigns with the dream act. i do have a question though, i have a ss card since i was little and i have used it to work but never been asked for more, why? and the in state thing i think was a mistake on the schools part. if they find out can my degree be void? thanks :)

if they didn't ask you for more than a SS card is because you probably wrote that you are a citizen on your application, if you check the legal resident box then they will ask you for a green card etc. And the in-state thing I don't know I don't think they make mistakes like that maybe they don't care but I'm guessing the worst punishment they could give you is take away your degree until you pay what you owe but i doubt it my guess is as good as yours.

actually...i never check the box...EVER....i'm so scared that i just dont...but i guess people assume i'm a citizen since i really dont have an accent.. :)

I checked the citizen box before.

IRS doesn't care as long as they have money in their pockets. :wink: My brothers have been paying taxes with an SSN "Not valid for employment" and nothing has ever happened to them.

i always check the citizen's box :lol:

actually, my ss card doesnt say anything and i have always paid taxes. My accountant has never asked me anything about my status....why? am i not supposed to be paying taxes or soemthing? this website is so helpfull....wow...everyone has really provided much insight. thanks :)

A lot of employers don't ask for all that info, as long as you have a real SSN. My brothers were just honest with their employers and said, "Well, we have expired EADs but SSNs that are not valid for work, but we have all these qualifications, etc. etc.". Their employers didn't really care as long as they had an SSN for bookkeeping. I would check into jobs around your neighborhood though because I live in S. FL where there are tons of illegal kids in universities and stuff so I guess employers just figure we're going to get legal sometime so they might as well employ us [at least that's what my brother's boss tells him]. I don't know how it is around the rest of the country so I don't want to give bad advice :). Good luck!
