first job interview advice please!
I have an interview at Target tomorrow morning and I am very nervous. This will potentially be my first actual job! All I did was community service up to now (I am 20 with no work experience besides that) so if anyone would like to share their interview experience ) Also, What did you wear? I am planning to wear a gray dress with a belt and short heels, is that too much? thank you!

Re: first job interview advice please!
Hello there. I had an interview and I was eventually hired at Target myself in January.
Dress professional. Nothing too major, but nothing too casual. Look like you are serious about getting the job. If you wear something red or khaki, you will get a lot of brownie points. For me, I was first sent to watch an introductory video. Well actually, first you check in and do a little questionnaire. After, the questionnaire and video I was interviewed by a manager. She asked all the basic questions. How was the video? Tell me about yourself? Why did you choose Target? Tell me about any work experience/volunteer experience? I did not have any so I just talked about teamwork in the classroom. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond the call of duty? What are your greatest strengths? And weaknesses? Also, a situational question. If you are working at the cash register and a customer claims that the item costs less than what the cashier ring up, what do you do? And that was it. I was hired right away and I was sent to go do a drug test. Naturally, all interviews will be different. Just relax. Do not be nervous. Dress well, smile, maintain eye contact, and sell yourself. Sounds corny, but be yourself. |

Also, if case you are wondering...
The job is pretty swell. The job is easy and you gain A LOT of experience. It's a breeze with friends and decent coworkers. Just stay sharp. No regrets. |

Re: first job interview advice please!
How rude of me. I forgot to wish you the best of luck!
Yes, Target is a great first job and it will beef up all your skills and resume.:grin::grin: After acing my interview my manager hired me on the spot. She then gave me instructions on where to take the drug test. In the meantime, they will be conducting a background check. If your Target store uses LexisNexis then you might run into a problem I had. The problem with our new social security cards are that they are so NEW that they are not in the system yet. It came back as 'invalid.' I received a letter from LexisNexis asking to fix this issue within 5 days or risk losing the job offer. I simply called the number on the letter and they asked me to email my EAD, SS Card, and a form of ID to them. They fixed the issue the next day. A few days later I received a call from my manager asking me to schedule orientation. At this orientation you must wear a red collar shirt, and khaki pants. This takes several hours. Introductions, videos, training, paperwork. Dress how they ask, look attentive, and bring all of your docs with you. This is where you officially 'sign up' for work. Good luck! |

Re: first job interview advice please!
Ask not what you can do for Target, but what Target can do for you.
Also ask why you should work for Target instead of other major corporations like Walmart. Nothing gets you in a better position than someone feeling like they need you more than you need them. |

Re: first job interview advice please!
I had the same experience that madman had. I worked at Target from November to January during the holiday season. Like you, I had no working experience. Target was my first job interview also. Just be ontime, smile, make eye contact and answer the questions to the best of your ability. The questions were pretty simple and straightforward. I worked as a cashier and on the sales floor. I pretty much got hired on the spot. They sent me to do drug test the same day. I started a week later.
Like Mad man said you may have issues with your background check. Dealing with LexisNexis was pretty easy. If you run into the issue that Madman and I had, I recommend that you scan a color copy of your documents and email it to them instead of faxing it. After I faxed it the lady on the phone said that it was too dark and had me email it. After that the next day I was cleared to start. Overall it was fun working at Target during the holiday season. Its a good start. I made a lot of friends there. Only reason I left was because they had to let the seasonal employees go but I got another jobs within a few days after. Congrats and good luck. |
