Pissed At Current Job

I was recently hired at this big retail. At first, the hours were great but now I'm only getting 4hr shifts for 2days or 1 day shifts. Barely making anything. I need another job but I can't find anything good. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

That seems to be common. Businesses want the luxury of only asking workers to show up when needed. If you have a work permit, find another job...simple.

You can say that again! They keep hiring new people but not enough hours.

I spoke with my manager about. I don't get along with her so when I tell her I need more hrs she somehow doesn't have any but I keep seeing new people.

Most likely they don't want you there anymore and giving you less hours is a way to tell you.

Pretty much this.

Also, try avoiding big retail chains. If you aren't particular about a job, try for something that will have more stable hours, like local businesses or labor jobs, I.e construction/landscape, warehouse/factory, office (can include reception, customer service, data entry)

Retail is the Plaugue if you dont have a marketable skill, such as foreign language or a natural ability to sell. especially if you have some sort of sales quota.

My current job is rather shity - it's in a warehouse. But my hours are pretty much guaranteed 35-40 weekly and I make more money than my friends in higher paying retail jobs since their hours are so sporadic.

If I may ask, how old are you and what do you study or have studied? Ideally, I'd recommend you give first preference to getting a job that you're qualified for academically. The point here is trying to get in a place where you can make a difference, slowly develop goodwill and show that you are a true value to the place..gradually you will create a situation where you can not be replaced. I know everyone is excited to finally get jobs and make some money but at the same time lets keep our eyes focused much further. In this economy, people are getting laid off so quickly and drastically. I just found out of someone who lost her HOSPITAL job. I always thought those were pretty secure. This is nothing to be scared of. I'm still confident that we can obtain and hold on to our jobs. Try to follow this mindset when looking for jobs. As you work in big retail chains, work on the side towards a more concrete/permanent type of job that will give you security. Good luck!

Restaurants are like this too. I worked for a small business for years and had a steady paycheck. Now I work at a big restaurant and the hours are not guaranteed at all. I am lucky enough to get the hours I wanted but most people get 3 shifts some 2, some 1 and they are mostly 2-4 hour shifts. I even saw a girl who got no shifts for 2 weeks. The job is great but the hours...who wants an 8 hour paycheck??
