Agjobs (Not) Coming Up says Immigrationprof (Yet) UPDATE 2

Senate to Vote on AgJobs

Immigration reform keeps coming back, in part because business needs labor. After the recent failure of a limited DREAM Act, the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits, and Security Act (AgJOBS) as an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill. AgJOBS provides a path to legal status and citizenship for farmworkers and guarantees a steady flow of labor for our nation's agricultural industry. There are many voices out there trying to block this legislation and the outcome on the vote is far from certain.

AgJOBS provides two paths to legal status for farmworkers. First, AgJOBS offers currently undocumented farmworkers the earn temporary legal status by meeting a past-work requirement in American agriculture. These farmworkers may later earn permanent immigration status and citizenship by meeting a future-work requirement of 3 to 5 additional years in the U.S. agriculture industry. Second, AgJOBS revises the H-2A visa program and would make it easier for seasonal laborers to work legally in the U.S.

It has been estimated that more than 50% of farmworkers are undocumented. These workers, like other undocumented immigrants, live in constant fear of being deported and separated from their families. AgJOBS, the product of years of careful negotiation, is supported by farmers, farmworker organizations and members of Congress from both parties.
Big Business sat on the sidelines during the Dream Act debate, but this time agribusiness is pushing heavily for Agjobs. We'll see if they can garner the 60 needed.

I have a feeling this will get the 60 votes needed.

If it passes just find a friendly farmer to say you are essential labor for him. All your problems are over!

Only a joke bad humor.

would this bode well for the DREAM or no effect at all?

When DREAM comes up in the future, our opposition will scream "Oh my God, Congress is trying to pass another amnesty. Look how many illegals came after they passed AgJobs in 2007" and they'll cite some numbers, mostly inaccurate and general.

But then it'll create a distinction between the different segments of the undocumented population, which is good for us. Right now, a common misconception is the DREAM will help all types of illegals, from the farm workers to students. If AgJobs passes and DREAM comes up in the future, there will be a distinction between farm workers and students.

propably have no direct affect for dream, but, if the bill passes we can make the reasonable conclusion that congress is capable of passing immigration bills in the the 21st century.

Ag jobs will brought up as an amendment to the farm bill, right?

Long shot, but why not try pushing Hagel to insert Hutchinson's revised Dream Act into the Agjobs. The reason I mention him is the fact that he is listed as a cosponser to both of those.

It is a long shot, however, I can see the republicans in congress making the argument that Dream Act is not jermain to AgJobs. However, its worth the shot, what do you guys think?
