How do you go about checking your SSN's credibility and security?

I feel a little distressed because I've sent a fax to my job but they said they did not get it. I then sent an email instead. My SSN is in their email database but I do not mind because they actually need it.

However, what irks me is about the faxing and how my manager telling me that they did not get it. My SSN must be in the hands of someone. I didn't want to ask the supervisor through email because it would seem like a hassle and I was in the middle of getting processed and asked about the position. I wanted it smooth. However, now that I'm in, I'm going to have to ask them in the first day about what happened to my fax, do you think this is savvy for a first day employee at a law firm? Sounds like I'm already asking for trouble :p

And that's why I'm wondering if there are some ways to check my SSN's credibility, if I'm a victim of fraud, how will I know? I, obviously, won't trust websites that will ask to enter my SSN and I know there is a way to do so through .gov department. I would like to read about first hand accounts though, how do you make sure your SSN is in the keeps and how do you check yours? I learned a hard lesson here, but I was really sure that faxing would be better because it can't be intercepted anyway. I ought to guard it with my life!

Obviously I'm pretty oblivious and that is why I'm asking. Thoughts?

If you sent it to the law firm, not sure why they would it/use it other than for the intended purpose, I think you are being paranoid for nothing.

He's not worried that they have his SSN, he's worried that he sent it to them and via FAX and they said that they never got it, so someone has his SSN and isn't saying it.

correct, the reason why I'm a bit worried is because the old man from my copy shop entered an additional number to the extension. So instead of 818 there's an extra 9 at the start of 818: 9818.

I think getting mails from the IRS will be an indication that someone nabbed it. I need to look into matter further though because I am paranoid...
