Last name confusion for future baby

Alright, first of all I'm not even close to having a baby or anything like that. I was just curious as to what last name my baby would carry if I had one. See, I have two last names like most Hispanic people do who were born outside the U.S. Example: Rodriguez Lopez. So let's say if I had a baby would he be Joe Rodriguez Lopez? I really don't want him to have two last names, I've always gone by with my paternal last name and I would only like him to be Joe Rodriguez, but my work permit and DACA have both my paternal and maternal last names. Any DREAMer that has children please help me clarify this? thank you.

You don't have 2 last names. One of those names is your mothers name then your dads and hers get merge and theres is your last name.

I am going to assume Lopez is the mothers name? In that case, Rodriguez would be the last name. Your son name would be John Rodriguez

that is it

No. They just take the first last name in this country unless the parent wants to add more. Americans like middle names. Usually is First Name Middle Name and Paternal Last name. Some parents hyphenate Paternal Last Name-Maternal Last Name.

You also only have one valid one in this country if that is both paternal and maternal. You like using two that's your problem. I only use one for everything.

My name is A-B-C-D. Official name is A-C and that is what I use. I sometimes use A-B initial-C. Only place that ever asks for A-B-C-D or cares what it is is USCIS.

Since the others have already established that its pretty much up to the parents to do as they wish, I have to ask, why wouldn't you like your child(ren) to have both the paternal and maternal last name?

I've always loved the idea myself. Even know a few Americans who do it. Ex. Phillips - Thompson
