My story with credit card
So, after getting approved, and finally landing a job, even though it wasn't any close to my major, I opened a new bank account (with a credit union). After about three months with the job, and shopping at macy's, i decided to try to open their credit card, which I didn't get it, no surprise there. So, I decided to try capitol one, since i read here a couple people had luck with it. I applied for one and i got approve for a $300 credit limit card.
I used that card every month to no more than $200 and paid in full by the due date. I had the card for about 5 months, and recently got a letter saying that they increased my credit limit to $1800, which was pretty cool. After doing my taxes, I decided to check credit karma, and it showed that my credit was about 735. Now, I'm going to apply for a discover credit card, since a couple people in here said they got approved. I guess with credit cards they need to see that you can pay what you borrowed, and they they'll raise your credit limit. |
Re: My story with credit card
You will really need to have a credit card. it's an advantage as you came to buy stuffs. You won't need to carry a lot of money in your wallet.

Re: My story with credit card
Nice. How do you have a credit score of 735 if you only opened a credit card not too long ago? Loans?

Re: My story with credit card
Credit cards are essential to building a credit history. With a credit history you can buy a house, buy or lease a car, rent an apartment, get student loans, get a job (credit sometimes affects job interview), get a cellphone, buy cheaper car insurance, start a business, get utilities to your house (power, water), and the list goes on.
There are many benefits to having credit cards. But with them you have to be responsible and not spend more than your livelihood. I know some people that don't get credit cards; but that is incredibly foolish because in that time you could be building a credit history and have the good credit when you want or need things. |

I did the same thing and found out its pretty easy to get a good score , all you have to do use very little (under 20%) of your available credit. After a few session of internal struggle I've reached the conclusion that the purpose of a credit score is to get into debt. With the exception of a mortgage or a school loan, i will gladly pay cash any day.

Re: My story with credit card
Congrats on your card!
Credit Karma is a great tool for checking your scores. I believe Discover also has a free FICO monthly score check which is more accurate than Credit Karma. For me, ever since getting my SSN - I've gotten a 35k Car loan, 3k American Express Credit Card, and couple other credit cards. Things are pretty sweet |

I totally forget the exact details but when my friend applied for a Discover for Student, his score was in the high 700s and it was his first credit card too. We googled stuff and found an article explaining why |
Re: My story with credit card
People had CCs before having an SSN. People opened Credits with just an ITIN, I wonder how that is possible?
I primarily just use my debit. I'm thinking about opening a CC but I'm wondering which bank fits me better. |
Re: My story with credit card
Get the Discover It card, I got 4,600 credit limit.
