Ideas for dad
Hi all,
I tried looking for a similar thread and couldn't find one. Here's the situation: my mom is very ill and had to stop working 6 months ago, she probably won't be able to work again doing what she used to. She is undocumented, same with dad, I'm under DACA. They both used to deliver car parts, now only my dad does, the only thing is my dad's truck is very old (1991), has broken down several times, it probably can't get repaired anymore. We've thrown a ton of money into that old pickup. So right now we're living with my income (small) and my dad's (smaller even). Dad works as an independent contractor, and he's looked for ind. contractor work but the thing is he is pretty old now (over 60). He's tried delivering mattresses and didn't last. He enjoys selling but all the things he's tried selling (landscaping services, newspaper ads, insurance, etc etc you name it) doesn't really sell here in the Latino market. So we're getting pretty desperate since his car is about to break down again, probably for the last time. I don't have a problem giving him my car to work with, only it's in bad shape too and will break any day. Does anyone have any, ANY suggestions for us? I wish I could give you a list of the skills my dad has, but for now it's just selling, and he doesn't speak almost any English. My mom's English is pretty good- and we've searched online work for her but everything we've found seems scammy. Things are pretty bad. Thanks for your help guys! |

Tow truck ?

Re: Ideas for dad
His truck is just a flimsy old pick-up, I'm not sure if that's what you were asking, or if you were suggesting towing as a job. I really doubt his truck could pull anything.

Re: Ideas for dad
Does he have a Driver's License of some sort? Not sure if Utah allows that or not...regardless, one industry he can try is being a Valet Driver. Hotels and places where he'd be an employee are out, but a lot of night clubs, restaurants, strip clubs, wedding venues, etc. hire an independent contractor for that work (since it's such a hassle to deal with cars, insurance, etc.). He could talk to one of those valets and ask for the boss's phone number. It's a cash business so a lot of those places don't ask questions though some require a DL to be able to let him park the cars.
This of course works only in bigger cities. In my younger days I did this type of work and though dealing with drunk douche bags is not easy and you're out in the elements from freezing rain to hot summers, it's not too physically tough. Since he doesn't speak English, he may have to be a "runner" instead of the lead valet though. There are always car washes too. |

We hadn't thought of that- thanks!
